The Texas band’s first album in seven years resonates like echoes from the past while also ushering in new, bold creative pathways.

Northern Transmissions

This album may not be soundtracking an actual movie, but it could soundtrack a movie in your mind, with all its radical dynamics and emotional punch. Their music gives life, even while contemplating death.

Spectrum Culture
Seven years after Explosions in the Sky’s last release, the chaos is more colorful, the volatility remains and new beginnings come into view.

XS Noize

End sees Explosions in the Sky further underline their credentials as rock’s finest instrumental band with another offering of deep, emotive tracks. Although exploring endings, it feels like the band are far from done and will continue to evoke emotions long into the foreseeable future.

AllMusic

End incorporates a lot of the touches and techniques that made The Wilderness stand out in the group's discography, from rippling electronics to post-minimalist repetition.

Clash

Returning to artist duties after a spell focussed on soundtrack work, ‘End’ finds Explosions In The Sky revelling in boundaryless creativity. Often melodically startling, the work contained therein feels close to definitive.

Uncut
The music is varied, best expressed by "Peace Or Quiet", which stretches their loud-quiet dynamic as far as it can go.

Exclaim!

End constitutes a worthy addition to Explosions in the Sky's discography, even if it doesn't really open a new chapter for them.

Classic Rock
Predictable as this dynamic may be, EITS are never ponderous, never less than beautiful.

Explosions in the Sky, at this stage of their careers, need to give us a whole lot more in order to really deliver. Maybe that’s not fair, but let me tell ya somethin’, kid: life ain’t always fair.

Mojo
A "rumination on life and death," which suitably chimed with earth's current 'end times' vibe, from sorrow to rage, elevated by post-rock's most luminescent guitars.

mmmmm real post-rock mmfmfmfgffffghhhhhh its exactly the same as everything else they've made how is this band so GOOD???

I know their fans don't want to admit it, but Explosions In The Sky ruined post-rock. There were already a few crescendo-core bands before they made it big, but almost everything in the genre since TEINACADP has been dull crescendo after dull crescendo that goes absolutely nowhere. EITS definitely weren't solely responsible for the painful decline of this genre, but they ... read more

I typically really like post-rock whenever I do listen to them, and I know these guys are legends, but WOW was this a grueling listen. Not only were the audio engineers deaf (why did the drums sound like that), everything asides from the nice washy guitars in track 1 and the creeping synths near the mid part of the album sounded really bad. This album was really bad. This feels like the most pale imitation of the modern post-rock sound. The (DANCE) electronic elements were cringe too. Maybe ... read more
