Swedish doom originators Candlemass gave birth to an instant classic with their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metalicus. But their 1987 follow-up Nightfall managed to break even more new ground by introducing the operatic bellowing of new vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose religious lyrics found the perfect match in the slow, grinding power chords written by bassist Leif Edling.
Another Candlessmass album that does not miss. Similar to Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall is a dark, sinister, and powerful album created within the depths of hell. I've noticed that there weren't any acoustic guitars or keyboards, and that they slightly implemented thrash into the album, but still delivers with shivering vocals and hard-hitting drums. Almost as amazing as the debut but not quite. Kind of less consistent but there’s also more tracks here. The sound is similar with nothing new i guess. That doesn’t matter though as i still loved it. Some incredible songs that might have been even better than some on the previous record. One difference with this is that there were these interlude style tracks here, which i actually quite enjoyed. A great display of Epic(us) Doom(icus) Metal(licus). And while I do prefer that other album more, and I think this record has too many filler interludes, it's still a consistent project that is carried by it's killer riffs and amazing vocals. Also "Bewitched" is stellar
I love this cover art. It actually translates really well the overall feeling and atmosphere of the record. Another monumental installment in their catalog, following a masterpiece such as Epicus Doomicus Metallicus with another masterpiece of the same level with both highlights and downsights in comparison, as I felt that their debut had a better guitar playing and a lot of focus in that mind-bending guitar tone, I loved to death Messiah's vocal delivery and the overall songwriting this ... read more
