Entertainment Weekly

A remarkably diverse, if not exactly surprising, mix of heavy rock, hip hop, and protest music.

With just a bare few excepions, Renegades works well, in part because Rage Against the Machine is both smart enough to change very little and talented enough to make the songs its own.

Rolling Stone

This Rick Rubin-produced covers collection — recorded on a whim while the quartet was finishing its now-delayed live album — shows why: Not only do Rage understand the sweep of rock and rap history, but they had bold and unusual ways of tearing that history up.

The expectation from picking a lot of really big-name artists could have blown up in their face, but the eclectic choice of songs and morphing each of them to fit their own style makes this one of the better cover albums out there.
This album is kinda controversial, and I remember a dude saying that it ruins Rage for having a perfect discography, thong that I agree, but with or without this album their discography still S tier. Yes, this is a really good LP, just that it's not at the level of their past stuff, but none of these is a bad cover, not even mediocre. For a cover album is actually pretty solid and does transform the songs into a new style and expression even though I wish they went out with a bigger bang.

Look, I love Rage Against The Machine as much as the next edgy white boy. But as a music fan, I gotta come clean: I hate cover albums. I'd rather hear an album that's comprised of all original music rather then music that was created by other people. However, RATM do bring on a group of pretty good covers on their sadly final record.

Favorite Jams: Maggies Farm, Beautiful World, Microphone Fiend

Lest Favorite: The Ghost of Tom Joad
