Buying into Luhrmann's vision is always the issue, but here, the music is crafted enough, inspired enough, and deep enough that it's worth diving into without reservations.

As the pre-release chatter seemed torn between premature adoration and crucifixion, the resulting collection is something more middling, neither offensive nor revolutionary, with memorable moments and forgettable ones.

Consequence of Sound

Put simply, The Great Gatsby soundtrack resonates like the dinky Grammy sampler album they give to us plebeians who aren’t important enough to attend the ceremony anyway.

Some of the artists that get a share of the spotlight don’t live up to the standout performances of the album. Regardless, this is a soundtrack worthy of a good film.

Tegardless of how trite the songs are, they also fail to provide anything akin to an enjoyable or immersive experience-- the combined effect is bludgeoning and fragmented.

As soundtracks go, this isn't terrible. However, it's not the visionary success Jay Z insisted. There are four tracks that don't belong here at all. The rest is, at best, enjoyable, and at worst, dull and trite. Lana Del Rey comes away with the biggest thrill here with "Young & Beautiful", despite delivering the strangest lyric on the disc: "That face makes me wanna party." That's a head scratcher, for sure. The rest of the song is as rapturous as the ... read more
Really quite awful. When I saw the artists Jay-Z had lined up for this soundtrack, I had huge expectations, but those those expectations came crashing down the minute I heard the Fergie track. I think the fact that the best track on this soundtrack is performed by Goyte, says all that needs to be said.
