Brilliantly ... on Rockferry you can't hear the joins. The closing track, 'Distant Dreamer', is an epic, orchestral stab of longing. A young Welsh woman channelling the Walker Brothers? Now that's clever.

Entertainment Weekly

Once the Dusty Springfield-flecked closer, ”Distant Dreamer,” comes round, you’ll be wishin’ and hopin’ for more.

A.V. Club
That ice-queen intrigue adds a certain cachet to the 23-year-old's occasionally overstudied lyrics.

For a debut album it's remarkably consistent and confident, and promises great things to come for the future.
80
Evening Standard

The emotional heft of her soaring, aching voice is irresistible. However she got here, she's the real thing.

80
Q Magazine
It all adds up to an impressive first step that ticks plenty of the right boxes, as does Duffy herself.
80
Rolling Stone
Rather than crooning about being committed, she sounds like she's being released.

Sputnikmusic
This particular precocious British soul starlet turns out to be worth the hype.

The shadows come richly dark, and the brilliance pierces.

AllMusic

Butler's production makes her solid voice and intriguing songwriting into an excellent album; although he stays in the background, the occasional guitar flourishes or sweetened strings make Rockferry a better debut than Joss Stone's or Amy Winehouse's.

The Line of Best Fit
I wonder how she’ll go with the Welsh National Anthem? She’ll have 60,000 to help out with the backing vocals if she gets stuck. One more reason to wish I’m there.

Drowned in Sound

Duffy’s nuanced vocal itself falls just a shade short of the Olympian standard that’s required to make stuff like this fly, and for all its polish, ‘Rockferry’ is still what you’d get if you put Amy Winehouse in My Fair Lady; refined, mannered, but just a teensy bit dull.

68
Coke Machine Glow

Although flawed, Rockferry holds a startling amount of promise.

Paste
Unfortunately, its during these rather naked moments where the album falters, mostly because Duffy’s robust voice often overmatches the music that surrounds it.
60
Slant Magazine

Rockferry is a pretty nifty party trick of a record, but it's not enough to justify Duffy's Next Big Thing billing.

60
The Guardian

There's nothing dislikable about Rockferry - but nothing that dazzles, either.

60
Uncut

Rockferry is almost a very good album, but, for all the classic soul hallmarks, there’s little insight into the actual soul of Duffy herself.

60
Mojo
Sometimes Duffy tries just that little too hard to capture the sound of soul music's glorious past.
60
NOW Magazine

At this point ... the movement of white UK female artists using 60s nostalgia to reinvent pop music is not all that original, but at least it’s a welcome break from the previous trends.

60
God Is in the TV
Again, an attempt at modern classic or classic with modern twist? I suspect this is what they were going for, but after three years in the making and a bunch of extremely well-written, well-polished songs, I'm still not sure this record is the real Duffy.
60
PopMatters

Certainly Rockferry doesn’t do anything new, but it doesn’t do anything that’s been done in a while either, and for Duffy, that should be enough for Duffy to carve out her name amongst the stagnant realms of current mainstream pop.

NME
Duffy’s debut is hoovered of personality, principally, because on this evidence, she hasn’t got any.

I don't even know why I'm listening to this, but it's great. Mercy is a fucking banger tho.

welsh queen, thank you for this pop-soul masterpiece. 'mercy', 'serious' and 'warwick avenue' are some of my favourite songs ever, especially mercy because it's forever associated to my early teen years - i remember the video would get played constantly in the music channels. there's such a sad and beautiful longing in this record that i resonate with, her voice is incredible. the soundscape in this is timeless.

A great debut album from this underrated soul artist. Groovy soul tunes throughout.
