Red House Painters capture a feeling so well that I forgot that I had never heard this album before while listening to it. As a fan of his most praised Sun Kil Moon albums, I wanted to check out the Red House Painters partly because of him and partly because I always have been confused by the name. But damn there is a lot to unpack.

RHP’s brand of slowcore is more maximal compared to that of their contemporaries, and yet it’s just as therapeutic as the most hushed of the genre’s greats. Beautiful record.

Red House Painters’ self-titled follow-up to their debut Down Colorful Hill is seen, alongside that record, as being some of the best Slowcore and Indie Rock music of the 90s. It’s hard not to see why. I loved their debut, it was an emotionally gripping and beautifully executed album that defined the Slowcore genre. Their follow-up, while not as good as their debut, is still an excellent piece of Indie Rock music.

BACK WHEN COLORS WERE NEW.

A collection of hazy, half remembered memories, distraught cries for love, and conflicting rage pointed inwards. Not so much a switch up stylistically from Down Colorful Hill, but more content to say everything on its mind (which is saying a lot because 'Down Colorful Hill' already had two 10+ minute tracks).
