American Teen generally plays things straight up, not too concerned about chasing bleeding edge sounds but resting nicely in the pocket between conventional R&B and a future-pop-minded audience ... Khalid is on to something on his debut album, a solid intro to a talented teen.
Through much of what fills out American Teen, his debut album, Robinson's not one to get worked up. He's in no particular rush, content to drift through life while accepting, and occasionally sort of celebrating, the present.
So... a lot of my coworkers LOVE Khalid. Like, they love him so much, I heard Young Dumb and Broke FIVE TIMES today in during my six hour shift. Lemme just say, you people don't know true pain until you've heard Young Dumb and Broke almost once every hour of your day. Anyway, the rest of the album... yeah, not great.
I think Khalid is a decent singer who is able to afford really clean production, and I see a lot of potential in him in the future. It's really too bad that none of this shows on ... read more
Sure he can sing, but for the most part Khalid's debut LP is an overproduced snoozefest of poorly written songs and too much of an emphasis on poppy hooks. You're going to be hearing "Have you heard of Khalid?" from every 14 year old with a twitter account for the next year or so.
fav track: Young Dumb & Broke
This project is far from perfect but I find it to be a lot of fun and it just makes me happy. This is by far the best music he's ever put out and the strongest tracks on here are very comforting. He doesn't have the strongest voice in the world, but he doesn't really try to do too much on this either. I don't know how well this will age as time goes on, but as of now, it still sounds pretty good to me. The only thing I don't like about this record as that it doesn't really switch up very much. ... read more
Honestly the most split i've ever been on a record. Many good songs but also some that fall flat and dont really go anywhere. Overall positive experience just conflicting.
this was the only album i listened to for like a month in my sophomore year of high school
The first three songs had me very worried, but American Teen turned out to good listen. It's rare to see a main stream name put out something with substance.
