Many of the best political rap albums succeed by saying a lot without saying much at all; oftentimes by not directly alluding to the topic at hand and using extended metaphors and other figures of speech. But there are also many political rap albums that get their message across by being blunt and direct with the topic at hand. Joey Bada$$' take on this genre is an awkward mix of the two, which does not work in his favor most of the time. His flow remains the same as it was previously on ... read more

One of the best hip hop albums this year so far, I would only say that RTJ3 and Quelle Chris are easily better (so far). I say this also because there's a lot of genuine quality in the album, Rockabye Baby is the clear stand out, the instrumental and verses are really on point, a really cool balance between a strong west coast rep on a proud east coast rep's album. Ring the Alarm, strong showing by Pro Era's main rappers and Meechy (love the rasp), and Amerikkkan Idol. Very political messages, ... read more

Joey has come through with an album that is significantly more political and powerful than his debut, the lyrical themes he tackles here are frequently very bold and the way Joey conveys his thoughts on these things is very aggressive, passionate and intimidating, this keeps the album very exciting in my opinion from beginning to end. Overall I think the album is very good, the only thing holding it back would the inconsistency in the first half. Tracks like TEMPTATION, LAND OF THE FREE & Y ... read more

Joey Bada$$'s sophomore album is a political wildfire, with Joey giving his honest opinions on the state of America. Joey has been known for his use of boom-bap instrumentals and a sort of 90's vibe to his projects but with this one, there is more of a theme of jazz-rap. On this album, the instrumentation excels especially with the first two tracks of "GOOD MORNING AMERIKKKA" and "FOR MY PEOPLE", the production for "FOR MY PEOPLE", I love, it just sounds so groovy ... read more

For an album, dealing with political and philosophical roots this album does not take enough time to make sure that the delivery is honest and contemplative.

Still leaps and bounds ahead of the average famous rapper right now, but the level of prov-ado feels completely ill-placed when talking about introspective topics, in moments where he should be most fragile in his lyrics, there is a sort of disconnect for the listeners.

Finally, there is a huge change in soundscape in the first and ... read more

Joey Bada$$ continues his consistent run with a more political album this time around. The themes he touches on this record are not exactly totally fresh or surprising, but he manages to stay engaging for at least most of its runtime with his austere, rapid-fire delivery and with the impressive guest-list that help giving the album a slightly diverse flavour. The major problem here is how the album is structured. While the first half contains these emotionally dense and triumphant sounds left ... read more

Joey's wordplay is good as usual, but I don't think the jazzy production style suits him best here.

Solid

If it just had more subtle lyrics, it would probably be fantastic.
But this production just screams me.

Best: FOR MY PEOPLE, RING THE ALARM, SUPER PREDATOR, LEGENDARY

Weakest: Y U DON'T LOVE ME (MISS AMERIKKKA)

My favorite album to come out of the year 2017. I love how Joey changed up his sound a lot from his previous albums and mixtapes but still made a masterpiece, it really shows how good Joey is. My one complaint about this album is that he spends the first few tracks talking about the same idea over and over, its not that its a bad idea or concept to rap about but it got kinda dull a few songs in.

Joey is a pretty damn good lyricist and this project was pretty interesting with its funky production, but it was just sort of boring. The hooks aren't very quotable, and the melodys can be jarring. THe political conciousness is often cohesive and "hard-hitting," and the racial commentary is pretty powerful.

edit 12/3: i take back what I said about the hooks, but my opinion on the production still stands. Its pretty fair throughout, some tracks far better than others, but on some of ... read more

The best album of 2017. Joey really improves his hooks here as many of them are really good compared to his older projects and the production is perfect, with both more calm old school sounding beats mixed with some neckbreaker boom-bap beats on Ring The Alarm and Rockabye Baby. Joey tackles the subjects he talks about perfectly and when adding a lot of replay value to a lot of lyrical content there’s not much to complain about.

Joey's best work to date and in my top 3 of 2017 albums. This is a really good body of work. It is conscious about America's current state, about black people and it gets emotional at some points. Joey's performance is actually really good in the majority of this project. My main complaint that at some point the album was kinda boring and the beats didnt help at all and I wanted Joey to be more aggressive and energetic such as in Rockabye Baby or Ring the Alarm. I really understand the emotion ... read more

Passionately projected views throughout this record, although by the end it feels repetitive. The content of this album is far superior to most present hip-hop albums. However I felt that the song DEVASTATED was the biggest flaw and didn't belong on this album.

I liked the new direction joey badass was heading to with this new album. He isn't rehashing 90s new York boom-bat beat, but evolving as an artist. What falls apart here is it isn't as strong lyrically wise than his previous record. I admire him taking a more political stance on his new LP, but most of the times it isn't full realised or developed. But what I do admire was in the first few cuts of the album taking a more soul approach and surprisingly joey's singer wasn't half bad either. ... read more

On point delivery, old school flow, insightful lyrics, Joey makes a statement about where he belongs in the industry. The deep 90's influenced rapper is back on track (pun intended) to speak to the ears of his listeners to inspire and educate.

FOR MY PEOPLE - Love the in and out trumpets of the song. A poetic song
TEMPTATION - Starts with a powerful clip into a jazzy beat and an epic smooth delivery. The hook will certainly stay with you.
LAND OF THE FREE - A lyrically deep commentary on ... read more

Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ is back with his most captivating album yet. On this sophomore project, Joey reflects on the hardship and political wrongness done by people and government alike. This album is nothing short of amazing and captures the true relic of political rap. Easily one of the best albums of 2017

This album will not send you to sleep, neither will it change your opinion on anything, or change the way hip-hop is indulged or expressed. This is a very average politically charged rap record. There are no beats that are game-changing and there are no verses that are mind-blowing. Bada$$ made an average rap record that addressed everything he has to say in a positive manner, but nothing too dangerous (if you don’t count the Trump shout-outs that every other rapper has managed to do at ... read more

To be Frank and honest with you, this album is absolutely sensational from start to finish. He shows wisdom that is way beyond his 22 short years on this earth and gives us all a culturally vital album which looks racism, political corruption and oppression square in the face and challenges them to the core. Joey is as lyrically mature as he is animalistic in his flow and cadence, which has the perfect variation between savage and subtle. I honestly didn’t think he could top his last ... read more

Joey Bada$$ is back with an extremely political and narrative album of how his struggles have inspired to rise to the top of the rap game. We have a modern day Tupac in the making. His sampling on "Temptation" gives us the emotional reaction of the African-American community of Americas treatment. The heartbreaking roller coaster Joey brings us along with is incredible and gives us the gift of raw lyricism. This is what New York rap is based upon and I'm excited to see what else this ... read more

VERDICT: Political rap done right. Joey shies away for the mostpart from his beloved boom-bap feel on his previous projects for more mainstream appeal. However that does not stop this from being one of the most cohesive and well-structured albums of the year.

I think Joey Badass shied away from what he's really good at in this album , in general it was very boring for me.

Joey's not quite there, but he's on his way somewhere. Nice work.

His ear served him well here, with this album having a pleasing, potent sound from start to finish while staying appropriate for the mood, and even through some underlying harmonic structures and choruses were not very spirited, the music was organized well and reached a level of maturity and bravery that not many his age or style has. My Score: 136/180 (Solid) = 76/100

Wasn't feeling this on first listen, but it's always difficult to make quick judgments when an artist diverts from established perceptions. Reminds me of Nas's I Am; like an overt attempt to grow as a song writer at the expense of the lyrical density that fans have come to expect. That being said, he's still better than the vast majority of MCs today and the hooks are starting to grow on me. Plus, extra points for any artist getting political in 2017.

Primeiramente, a sonoridade mantém uma energia ... read more

The ambition and the concept clearly usurped the execution. There a few nice guitar touches here and there but for the most part this album was sonically and lyrically disappointing. The writing lacks much nuance over the issues the album is trying to tackle. It all just comes off as a little half assed. I must say though, there are a few tracks that I can vibe with. Joey is still very much a talented rapper.
