Perfect Album #3 - Disconnection
First off, THANKS for 400 (Now 500)! I really appreciate the people who have invested in my writing and to be able to think that people like what I write… it’s shocking.
I didn’t think I’d make it here, especially in only 2 months, but y’all just continue to surprise me with kindness and love. The fact that I’m at 200 reviews and y’all are still going really makes me feel ... read more
Due to the fact that most mainstream music is dominated by pop, and when something’s mainstream, the majority of it can be quite stale and average. You can name dozens upon dozens of different artists that seem to blend into the same crowd. Never really switching up their style, doing everything by the book, but still coming out very successful. From the outside looking in, there’s not much to like with pop if you don’t like the socially accepted norm that it’s ... read more
This is an album I have been looking forward to for over 2 years. Each year that passed after Pure Heroine released, I became more and more nervous for what was to come. From the work on the Hunger Games soundtrack that Lorde did and her feature on Disclosure's newest album, the music that was released by the New Zealand native was spotty and inconsistent. But then she dropped Green Light, the opening track from Melodrama, earlier this year. It was a little generic and sounded like almost ... read more
Listening Party (w/ my good friend @TomBejoy)
Melodrama, a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions. Lorde's sophomore album certainly lives up to the definition of its title, being an album that will end up affecting your emotions as it's an excellent body of work that captures Lorde's feelings and displays them in diverse ways, delicately and destructively. Imagine a relationship as a party, starting with the preparation ... read more
Praise the Lorde.
I’ve never expected to give her first two albums perfect scores, but I guess I’m unintentionally copying ARTV lol
Mainstream pop music can be more stale than a pile of Doritos that sat out in the open for over 2 weeks that nobody bothered to throw away. They make Walmart-core music that gets sold to the masses and they get lots of money off of it.
This album has a huge sense of uniqueness that makes this a breath of fresh air in a smoggy music industry. It also ... read more
This is absolutely wonderful! It sounds natural, unique and extremely pleasant. There are no words to describe how well-done this is. The production is flawless it brings new elements throughout the album, which turns it into something as huge as possible. The composition is clear, and its lyrical structure is adequate. Simply marvelous.
When I first listened to Melodrama a few years back, I didn’t think too much of it, I just thought it was ok. But now, more so than ever, I can relate and connect to the message that’s being conveyed. This record is an incredible display of Lorde’s confidence, acceptance, and genuine ambition. The growth of her as an artist and as a person is profound, capturing elements of life in bold ways to express the emotions in love, self-discovery and empowerment.
The production is ... read more
Oh wow. I was not prepared for the emotional journey this album took me on. Melodrama is a colorfully sad and melancholy record, one that feels like driving in a car passing city lights by with a recent heartbreak weighing on the heart. The album is emotionally devastating but at the same time vivid, it’s almost like you can see whole dreams in this music. The art pop atmosphere creates this feeling very well and the whole project is just so musically animated that it’s hard not to ... read more

No matter how much this album has grown down on me over the last few years. (I used to think this was literally the best album of all time at one point), the memories, nostalgia, and relative pop innovation on here are commendable. There's a degree of over-professionalism and intentional perfectionism on this album, which is pretty much a testament to the ties Lorde had that helped her gain her claim to fame, but it almost feels well earned given how ... read more

Hot take: I prefer Pure Heroine over Melodrama. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Melodrama. Maybe it's just because I'm not as used to Melodrama as Pure Heroin, which is the album I grew up with. Still, Melodrama is a great pop album and deserves to be called a pop classic. I will say that the production has definitely evolved, still being catchy while also having depth. Sober is one track that has so many things going for it, and it all comes together nicely. The ... read more
What I’ve noticed is that a lot of critically acclaimed albums in the mainstream prioritize style over substance, and melodrama is a perfect example. While “homemade dynamite”, “Supercut”, and “hard feelings” are incredibly well executed and memorable, the rest of the album isn’t anything I’d have any reason to come back to.
I think when any pop album has a bit more artistry than typical top 40 hits, people act like it’s a ... read more
Very disappointed. Why wasn't every song Royals? I wanted more Royals. Very upset. *growls and bares teeth*
"A revista Pitchfork em sua review desse álbum comentou que 'Lorde captura as emoções como ninguém...' e acho que eu não poderia ser mais certeiro em uma avaliação."
Depois do longo período de 4 anos de espera do seu 1º álbum para esse, a jovem neozelandesa cresceu e amadureceu, sendo essa mudança perceptível em sua obra. O "Melodrama" é um retrato cru e visceral dessa realidade, onde ... read more

I fell in love with the atmosphere and the energy she gives off, plenty of replay value too.
It's like Billie Eillish, but Lorde wasn't born yesterday
this album has a special place in my heart. it’s what made me realize that pop can be amazing and something doesn’t need to have guitars for me to like it.
I adore everything about this album. From the album title and cover to the music itself, I love it so much. It feels so nostalgic and yet it captures themes that feel very present to me in the stage of life I'm in at the moment. The atmosphere across the record is incredible and yet indescribable. It's cavernous and angsty, yet so inviting and fun. It's one of those records that has stuck with me so profoundly since my first listen and has unquestionably, to whatever extent, shaped the person ... read more

I have realized that I am a music snob. A very common side effect of an AOTY user. This album is one of the most streamed on Spotify, and falls under the mainstream genres of pop and synthpop. The tracklist makes it look like a random collection of songs from Lorde that are just designed to sell records. Even with the high user score, I looked at this album and thought; "yeah there's no way this deserves an 87. Mainstream pop bullshit album."

Never really got that much into Lorde before, so thought I’d finally change that here, and my god, this was so much better than I was anticipating. “Melodrama” is an album with a perfectly fitting album title, with some of the easily best production of the 2010s. Adored the writing on here, almost every song on here just hit me like a semi truck dosed in lemon juice. Vocals are on point throughout all of this album, too. It’s just an amazingly solid pop album, def one of ... read more

"When people speak in a very elaborate and sophisticated way, they either want to tell a lie, or to admire themselves."
Leo Tolstoy
the brash and rebellious attitude lorde showed on her debut full-length was definitely challenged, and the result is this amazing, intimate, and emotional piece of maturity and self-care. the lifestyles lorde previously criticized creep into her life, and she's dumbfounded with what to do and where to go with her life. it seeps into her relationships, and this seems to be the main focus for many of the tracks. many genuine emotions, like greed, pain, love and more, are transmitted through these ... read more
In 2013, 17-year-old Lorde released "Pure Heroine", an album that has been critically acclaimed. Since then, four years have passed and the New Zealander is back with a second project called "Melodrama" ... Lorde offers an intimate album that reveals his wounds of the transition to adulthood after a painful rupture. With themes such as loneliness, self-quest and love disappointment, the singer-songwriter's warm voice is still very important. She sings by accentuating the ... read more
A shooting star's awe factor only lasts a second. After being dubbed the next big pop sensation, Lorde's trajectory was set in stone and as a result of that the world unintentionally set her up for failure. The starlet found herself placed in a box with far less forward thinking peers. This box failed to soak up her adolescence, talent and vision, Lorde decided to force her way out of this box in order to build a fortress where subtleness and sheer brutality was indistinguishable.

I'm rereviewing this because my past self was dumb and rated this a 68. I'm embarrassed.
Lorde is just so good at being relatable. Her first album reflects how it's like to be young and touches on all the experiences you will have in this time and this album just shows how it is to get in your early 20s and boy it's done so well. Melodrama is an album that is like so everything to me now.
The songs are just brilliantly crafted with so much care and effort put into them. They are experimental ... read more
