This is not a same-old, forgettable release – N1A screams out talent harder than your favorite black metal band has ever screamed anything.

Tiny Mix Tapes

It’s tempting, too easy, to slide Number 1 Angel in as an inevitable Charli release, impossible accessible, unable to hear too much of — the pop for us, the pop wanting itself.

80
The 405

It may not hit the mark every time, but her adventurous, unapologetic approach to driving pop forwards to exciting new ground should be praised.

80
The Line of Best Fit
Charli XCX still has a coolness her peers would kill for.
80
God Is in the TV

Number 1 Angel manages to strike a balance of the sounds Charli has succeeded at in the past whilst still taking risks. She’s fused the dark 90s R&B of True Romance with the fiery attitude of Sucker and presented it as a concise and rewarding 10 track.

Dork
Rather than a collection of throwaways or experimentation, ‘Number 1 Angel’ sees Charli doing what she does best. Full of primary colours, big hooks and loads of mates, it’s ever-shifting but Charli’s pop crown remains firm.

GIGsoup

With XCX‘s contributions of undeniably catchy melodies, belting hooks and recognizable vocal arrangements – she’s managed to turn the PC Music genre on it’s head from an intense and divisive nature and bring it confidently into the mainstream.

75
Pretty Much Amazing
Aitchison intelligently pairs her clever lyrics against beats that push genres outward, her filling in the spaces with her hooks and gigantic personality.
70
Rolling Stone

Angel makes this pioneering human-hologram marriage seem far more natural and cohesive than on Vroom. The beats aren't as abrasive, her vocals are distended in ways that are disorienting but not jarring.

70
Crack Magazine

Number 1 Angel succeeds in pulling the listener into their saccharine-sweet hooks and quick-changing dynamics.

70
The Needle Drop
Charli XCX continues to turn pop on its head with PC Music's best producers.

Pitchfork

You could see all this as camaraderie: Charli, having sorta made it, helping others catch up. But the cost is hearing one of pop’s most vibrant young personalities consistently, disappointingly upstaged.

Freaky little bitch when I'm out with Charli, yeah we keep more eyes on us than the show iCarly.

CHARLI XCX’S DISCOGRAPHY DIVE #4

While “Number 1 Angel” doesn’t wow me like “Vroom Vroom”, it still continues to be experimental, but while being more of a blend of her first two albums and her EP. And the result is pretty enjoyable, even if sometimes it can end up feeling samey or a little forgettable.

What can I even say? Number 1 Angel was vital in the formation of hyperpop as a genre. The mixtape revitalizes electropop with a fresh and new cyber-futuristic coat of chrome. Number 1 Angel has a few stellar songs but is inconsistent and has okay hooks.

The project where Charli's hyperpop era started.. It is good, consistent, catchy but lacks super big and memorable hits and sometimes overuse pop cliches.
