There's few things worse than seeing an artist you love slowly regress with every album they put out

On first listen this album was actually surprisingly unenjoyable. I found Declan’s whispy and usually sweet, innocent vocals to clash badly with the artistic and experimental rock methods he chose to use. The production also felt very messy and straight out unlistenable.

However as time has gone on McKenna’s charm has won me over and I have found the seen the quirks in his music fun, seen the light in the past negativity.

I have known about Declan’s music for a few years ... read more

Hopefully bro finds what he’s looking for 🤧

Woah wtf. This is a wonky listen. I’m somewhat familiar with Declan McKenna, I’ve heard a handful of songs and the ones that I’ve listened to I’ve honestly enjoyed a lot, especially the song British Bombs. This album is very weird. It jumps from one vibe to another through each song. BUT is it fun? Absolutely. That’s what won me over with this album. Not only that but the production is great, and there are some ... read more

Please get that metal detector away from my face, I promise that there is no metal in me-

--SHORT REVIEW--

Declan McKenna experiments with a lot of left turns in this album, displaying his versatility, and passion for different genres. Does it deliver? No, no really. For the most part, the beginning of this album is a hastily made, sloppy attempt at a different type of music, and it seems to have been made for the sole purpose of making a "different" type of song. However, the ... read more

[SLIGHTLY BIG REVIEW FOR MY USUAL LIKING]

With musical emulations, a sense of fun in making music, and lyrics that are poetic yet always filled with irony, Declan McKenna releases his third studio album, 'What Happened to the Beach?', and once again, it doesn't disappoint in practically any aspect. I confess I'm a bit biased when it comes to this artist's music, whom I admire and am a big fan of, but I always try to evaluate everything I listen to as impartially as possible, considering that ... read more

“What happened to the beach?”, é o primeiro verso que ouvimos Dylan cantar quando tocamos o seu novo álbum, What Happened to the Beach?, porém, eu acredito que a pergunta em si não seja referente a alguma praia, e sim ao próprio cantor. O que aconteceu com ele? Ou melhor, o que aconteceu com o glamour do glam rock que continha em suas produções?

O disco é muito diferente de tudo o que já havia feito até ... read more

What Happened to The Beach is a decent but inconsistent Indie Pop album having an identity crisis. While reading my reviews it's pretty obvious to say that I think variety is a good thing on an album (most of the time); sadly, they have a really hard deciding what they want to do on this record.

They are a few decent bops on here however such as Tracks 4 & 11, but the rest are slightly bad to mid at best. Nothing too inspiring here but it's a decent time killer with some fun songs.

Aside from the singles, Declan Mckenna's 'What Happened to the Beach?' seems like a massive step down. Early cuts 'WOBBLE' and 'I Write The News' aim for discordant but land on unkempt, and although salvation arrives with 'The Phantom Buzz', overall the album fails to leave an impression akin to that of his previous efforts

What Happened To The Beach? showcases occasional brilliance amid a search for identity, leaving listeners with a sense that McKenna's true sonic fingerprint has yet to fully emerge.

It's okay Declan, Sgt. Pepper's was our favorite album too.

This was obnoxiously overproduced and mixed to the point of covering up a lot of the vocals. There's some heaters here and there but for the most part this one's inconsistent.

Very surprised to see such a mix of reviews on here - this definitely feels like an evolution of Declan McKenna's sound whilst staying original to the sound that got him here. Maybe not as fun and whimsical as his previous work, but definitely staying true to himself with tints of Bedroom Pop still showing on here.

Politically-charged, intricate and detailed production - although this was a 4 year wait, I do feel satisfied with this one.

As a fan of Declan's previous 2 albums, this was a huge disappointment. While my biggest complaint with Declan's previous two albums would have come to his lyrics, I actually found his lyrics to be much better on this album. The only problem is that the music that accompanied it was unbearable. Even the more enjoyable songs, like Sympathy, felt one note. This album mainly felt like Declan responding to some of the criticisms of his previous albums being "nothing new" by trying to ... read more

What Happened to This Bitch? That's the real question.

While "WHTTB?" has a couple of timid hits, I must admit that nothing here has met the expectations I had for Mr. McKenna's third studio album. The lyrics might be alright and the production might be fun for the most part, but this is a plain boring album by his standards.

WOBBLE - 5/10
Elevator Hum - 7.5/10
I Write the News - 6.5/10
Sympathy - 7.5/10
Mulholland's Dinner and Wine - 8.5/10
Breath of Light - 6/10

Moments of absolute brilliance padded out with baffling non-songs. Like seriously the highlights here are so so good, but there's just not enough of them for "What Happened to the Beach?" to live up to the high standards of his first two records. Impressively weird production for an indie pop record, sometimes used to great effect, but elsewhere falls completely flat and completely blocks me from connecting to the songs. Although it grew on me a bit, I'm super torn on this one - but ... read more

Vampire Weekend for straight people. It feels like it's trying to have quirky ideas and novel ideas but none of it really feels like it's coalesing into a fun song. Just leaves me scratching my head.

Few spotlights jet from Declan McKenna's indie-identity-crisis, What Happened to the Beach?

Declan McKenna's new album sees him ditching the glam rock of Zeros in favour of a more unfocused yet fun sound. Because this album is a great listen. It's harmless fun and it sounds he's having fun making it. However, it is still unfocused. Sometimes we have pop rock, sometimes indietronica, sometimes indie pop, while maintaining some political lyrics and introducing neo-psychedelia. Prior to this, I'd only heard a few of his songs, but I could still see the political lyrics on Brazil and ... read more

A wildly eclectic record that jumps around thematically and feels like it has been spliced together from a number of different sessions. Overall an enjoyable record that if it were a little more focused could be very good indeed.

I have no idea how people aren't liking this, "What Happened to the Beach?" is Declan McKenna's third album and I've heard all his previous work, and have no idea what people don't see in this in comparison. This album is an upbeat and fun project with tons of personality but in way that just feels authentic rather than corny and forced. I think my personal favorite from this record is the third track "I Write the News", just when it goes into the ... read more

King Krule if he tried to make an album with Beck and it sounded like a garage demo most of the time
Some fine songs here and there, but nothing I loved at all
Really boring moments mixed in with really annoying moments don't excite me to return to it all that much tbh

A couple of decent tracks on Declan McKenna's latest album. Aside from those few cool spots that I enjoyed, there was not a lot going on for me. It is filled with alright tracks, though, and it's mostly inoffensive. What Happened to the Beach? I don't know, the album didn't even go there so we didn't find out.

I'm not familiar with McKenna's other work, so correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds like a textbook example an artist doing too much.

Quite disappointed by this drop, a fair few songs on this that don't hit the mark they are going for and there's only a couple tracks really worth returning to
