Bruh how the fuck are there already so many good releases like I can’t with this shit (the thing though is that I can)

The streak of good 2024 albums continues with another artist that I have never heard of before in my life. Bill Ryder Jones brings some absolutely stunning balladry here. The instrumentation here is truly breathtaking, so much life in the production and the vocals are so passionate. The strings are lovely, and really pack a punch. Especially with This Can’t Go On, ... read more

The triumph of the British musician, previously known for his work with The Coral, in the new chamber album, undoubtedly the best of his entire creative career, with many artistic and musical twists.

A walking (slumbering?) contradiction of an album in that it at once feels very intimate and domestic but also there’s a grandiosity, as well as a call to engage collectively with all that sadness, all the depression. So despite starting off at the level of a Velvet Underground whisper on ‘I Know That It’s Like This (Baby)’ by the mid album interlude ‘…And the Sea…’ Ryder-Jones is channelling ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.

Rating everything on AOTY released in 2024 #22

I listened to this album in full while I was eating earlier - it definitely suited the mood :)

Forgive me for stereotyping but I find it weird that a man called Bill is capable of making an album as beautiful as this

Ok, look. I'm sorry if this album isn't the most significant release on AOTY. It's just that... SO MANY albums were released on the 12th of this month. I couldn't just listen to them one by one on the same day, ok? I'm doing this in order of the albums I have heard. So, to start it off.

Bill Ryder-Jones. This guy is an English singer and songwriter from England. He has quite a few albums in his discography. Initially starting in the band called The Corals and still being in that group, Bill ... read more

While this doesen't really stand out in a big way, the production is great, the vocal delivery is incredible, and the messages are sincere and relatable. What more could you ask from a singer-songwriter album?

First album of the year that I've sat back and really looked forward to each next track. It's come out so early, but I think in similar way to Gaz Coombes record last year, this will have the staying power to feature in the year's best. And if it doesn't, well....what a year 2024 has been!

"There's something great about life" - It's Today Again

First time I listened to an album of the English singer-songwriter Bill Ryder-Jones, maybe it's a pity, but better late than never. From the beginning Bill makes me think of other artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Matt Berninger or even David Bowie - and there are details such as the trumpet in the background of "I Hold Something in My Hand" which makes me think of yet other artists as Beirut. In addition I would like to your attention to the opener which is a suitable cover of the song ... read more

You know, in a week where the big releases mostly disappointed me, I'm glad I checked out this project. Don't get me wrong, it's not incredible, but for what it is it's super solid and consistent in its delivery and production, while still keeping a sense of variety that a lot of singer-songwriter projects fail to have. Probably worth a listen, even if I can't see this winning any awards by the end of the year; at the very least check out the highlights This Can't Go On and Thankfully For ... read more

I've been a bit out of pocket recently (although I was able to get out a few reviews here and there). And so here's some quick personal news to justify that: I got engaged to my girlfriend of three years this weekend! It was an awesome weekend that we got to spend together and with family friends, but the planning leading up to it was a mess and so I wasn't able to spend much time spewing music opinions into the great void of the internet.

Anyhow, enough about me. Bill Ryder-Jones' new ... read more

A really soothing indie album I like the singers voice a lot and the vibe is very calming throughout. It gave me slowecore and Saddle Creek Indie vibes as well. Very up my alley

If you're like me, looking at the front page of AOTY, seeing this little album by an artist you've never heard of before, and thinking to yourself: "is this worth my time?" - I've got an answer for you: Yes it is!

"Iechyd Da", behind its cryptic title and album cover, is a really poignant and soft singer-songwriter album, with heartfelt lyrics, great production, and big attention to detail. The instrumentals on this project range from super quiet, to orchestral and ... read more

Very stunning experience, I wasn’t familiar with this artist before but this is really beautiful. The orchestral arrangements are quite grand in places and yet the softness of the vocals and the overall slow pace still give this album a very intimate feel. Despite maybe dragging slightly in the middle, this album is full of emotion and really rewards you for your time. Absolutely worth a listen.

Sad Winter: The Album

This is such a comforting album all the way through. The slow Singer-Songwriter and Indie Folk genre perfects the longing lyrics Bill has throughout. What starts off as just a sad Singer-Songwriter album turns into an astonishingly beautiful and heartbreaking record. It sounds like you're walking alone during the middle of January as the snow flutters slowly down to the ground. You've been feeling terrible lately but you try to forget it by turning this on.

If this same exact album was released by Sufjan Stevens instead of Bill Ryder-Jones it would have a 90 on this website. Far and away the best album of the year so far.

,,lechyd Da" is album that intrested me since it's release, but somehow i couldn't got to it until now. This is probably the first record to receive must hear in this year so i had to check it out.

Bill Ryder-Jones is another artist i never heard of, so this is my first experience. He's from England with decades-long career as producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer/songwriter and one of the co-founders of band The Coral, at least that's what his Spotify bio says.

Iechyd Da, the latest from Bill Ryder-Jones is my first exposure to the singer-songwriter's music and it makes for an early 2024 surprise. Ryder-Jones' approach to this style of music doesn't come from a place of new, but rather one that enlarges the sound with lush arrangements that include pronounced strings, organ, and children's vocal backing, making it appear bigger than it is and distinct to him. Lyrically, things can get a bit inward and somber, but the production works to provide a ... read more

It is pleasant at times, particularly when it finds inspiration in britpop or baroque music, but lacks in novelty and original ideas.
