On CollXtion II, Allie X crafts a sort of dark pop sound that'll infatuate listeners of both DIY indie artists and the top 40 variety.

The album lacks a rousing anthem like CollXtion I’s “Sanctuary,” but the hooks come fast and furious.

CollXtion II marks a streamlining of her Top 40-friendly instincts, melding 80s pop and contemporary trends into a sharply refined sound.

While I don’t think it has quite as high highs as her first CollXtion, I think this is such a solid album of alt-pop/synthpop. Here she goes for a fully modern take on her synthpop sound, more informed by R&B and I quite love it. It’s not insane besides a few really great moments like her fantastic vocals on Old Habits Die Hard, but she really just knows how to consistently do this niche well with charming romantic and sexual writing. I just really love her shit tbh

The full length studio debut of Canadian pop singer Allie X, 'CollXtion II' continues to embrace the synthpop revivalism of the era with further influence from top 40 R&B and electropop. It's a bit of a worry since I had said on my review of her debut EP that I felt Allie X hadn't brought enough personality and originality to the style to help her stand out, and I won't lie I feel this album is even worse for that lack of distinction, but there are certainly some highlights that I feel she ... read more

Another pretty good pop album from her that has some standouts, and the rest being decent but nothing too special. Casanova and Old Habits Die Hard are my favorites here, with their especially strong hooks and vocal performances. That's So Us is another highlight, with some really cute lyrics.

Allie X's potential for a standout pop album is evident here, and while "CollXtion II" is a strong step in that direction, it feels like she's still on the verge of hitting that sweet spot. There is one track, "Casanova," that didn't quite resonate with me. But the rest of the album compensates with its quality, making it an intriguing listen that even nudged my music tastes in a new direction.
