Slant Magazine

An eclectic, cinematic effort that’s also surprisingly cohesive.

The Line of Best Fit

The Road: Part I ... is probably the most cohesive Unkle record yet, thanks in part to the dark reflective poetry and spoken word that seems to bind it.

PopMatters

These are carefully-constructed, engaging, moving pieces that exist on a plane beyond that of typical electronic-producer-with-guests material.

AllMusic

An ethereal, magnetic, and alluring piece of work, The Road, Pt. 1 is a robust album with ebb and flow.

The Guardian

The guest list – ranging from soul singer Eska to Tricky-like rapper Elliott Power – isn’t so starry, but it is effective, and Mark Lanegan delivers the strings-soaked symphonic goth of Looking for the Rain with typical aplomb.

A very cohesive album. Great tracks and collaborations.

In a similar way to the 1998 debut, if this album catches me in the right mood then it's a fun packed ramble...if it catches me in the wrong mood then I find it all a bit disjointed and the dips in quality feel too pronounced.

Certainly the best songs here are some of the most impressive of 2017 - and if nothing else everyone should at least try those out.

Nothing sparkles here. The instruments are pushed back into a big bland pool and the guest vocals (apart from Lanegan) are sadly uninspired.

the most complete vision and most cohesive record UNKLE has made. this ties together the ambitions of War Stories and the beauty of their romantic and cinematic pieces in a compelling narrative structure. the results are stellar. it is heartening to see a fully realized artistic pursuit finally achieved.
