When I listened to "Hesitation Marks" back in 2018, I praised it for being a cool throwback with plenty of what makes Nine Inch Nails so great. It's been two years now and I think that this is their weakest LP to date Not to say that it's bad, however, because it definitely has pros. The mostly electro-industrial direction is a nice throwback to the days of "Pretty Hate Machine" and it contains a few of Trent's best tracks to date. There's also "Everything" which ... read more

This album is a strange one. On one hand, it doesn't take much risks in providing energetic and thought provoking tracks, but on the other hand it's one of the more experimental and unique Nine Inch Nails albums to come out in a long time. No matter how you shake it, this album still has some fun and unique ideas at play, both sonically and lyrically.

Favorite jams: Various Methods of Escape, In Two, I Would For You

Lest Favorite: The Eater Of Dreams

2 decades after Nine Inch Nails started, they are still releasing dirty and moody songs that still leave a lasting impression. At this point in their discography part of me does feel like its getting old but part of me also feels appreciative that they are always a reliable band to make a good album even if they aren't making as ambitious records as they once were in the earlier part of their discography. This is one of the more electronic records they've made too, and it doesn't feel too dated ... read more

Once a harbinger of industrial rage, Trent Reznor's albums now whimpers with a dull roar. Contentment has dulled the Nine Inch Nails edge, resulting in a tired and subdued beast. The once-ferocious roar has been replaced by muted meows, and the angst-ridden crooning of "Find My Way" fails to mask the album's lackluster sound. "All Time Low" aspires to be Kraftwerk but settles for a mediocre imitation of Blancmange.

'Hesitation Marks' is a far cry from the groundbreaking ... read more

Nine Inch Nails Discography #8: Hesitation Marks

or

The one that is aptly named

Look, I really respect this thing. I love all the places it pulls from; it's the most pop that NIN have sounded since Pretty Hate Machine, and the alt rock influences are a new touch which works really well for them on tracks like Satellite and Running. That said, it feels like the first three tracks are just non-existent, and the record only really clicks into gear when All Time Low hits, which it must be said, ... read more

After a 5 year hiatus, NIN return with an album more in line with the sounds of their debut, Pretty Hate Machine. And, in my opinion, this is their least heavy album yet (excluding Ghosts and Still). Just like The Slip, this starts strong with Copy of A and Came Back Haunted. But from there, it doesn't really go anywhere. Similar to Pretty Hate Machine, it blows all its momentum at the start with the rest, with a few exceptions. That exception is Various Methods of Escape, which is a solid ... read more

Nine Inch Nails' discography: Part 9 of 12

If I had to wonder what NIN would sound like 20 years in, I would definitely picture something like Hesitation Marks, and I'm not mad about that at all. Stylistically, this might even be one of my favorite of their albums. It feels like a great balance between that groovy tension of The Fragile, and the spacious ambient ghostliness of... well, Ghosts. It's a really balanced sound with a lot of memorable moments, particularly when it comes to the ... read more

Hesitation Marks is an invasive, tricky album with lots of twists and turns. Not the most inspiring but nonetheless enjoyable. It's not dull, but not exactly bold either. I do feel its grit and pleasant mild intensity. Its uncanny feels are highlighted well, but some of its more subtle parts do drag it.

Definitely not cathartic and has sparse high points, lots of low lying stuff. I do feel that the album does it well for the most part. It all fits together with its direction and motive. The ... read more

Very experimental piece from Reznor's workshop, less noisy than the first five albums and definitely more electronic. Its good but sometimes i was just bored, but I can't say that NIN lost their creative potential, cause Hesitation Marks are overall very interesting piece and they definitely still got it.

Eh, I still don’t understand it, but I can’t really look at it as “the bad Nine Inch Nails album” anymore.

I’ve grown to the idea that this album is a lot slower than what I’m used to with NIN, but I think the thing I still haven’t grown to is just how empty it feels. Looking back on Still which was intentionally stripped back, I can see why I liked that one more, considering not only were most of the songs remixes, but even then ... read more

This album is to an extent underrated. Though wasn't ambitious or as exciting as NIN's previous work, it was interesting with groovy to energetic guitars, vocal delivery, weird but fun percussion, and use of analog electronics. Lyrically, the album is too moledramatic and uninspiring.

This is the only album I can’t really say Trent has put his all in to. A lot of boring, weird tracks that fit like melted puzzle pieces. Feels like most of this album was ghostwritten in a way that made the most possible sense and because of that it’s so stale. A very disappointing release.

Definitely more memorable than The Slip. Daddy Reznor๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿ’ฆ sounds more inspired on this record and you can tell a lot of effort went into it. NIN tried to make an album that perfectly sums up their sound, wrapping everything great about them up in a neat little bow. And for the most part, it works. Though it lacks the edge and aggression of the albums it's very obviously trying to be most reminiscent of (Broken, The Downward Spiral. Just look at the album art... I mean arts. There are ... read more

While many may write this album off as lazy, I think it contains some of the best NIN material of the last 20 years. The return to Reznor's electro-industrial roots alongside some of the best tracks he had written in a long time made for one of the best NIN albums in recent years.

The past is the future and somewhere in the middle lies the truth.
Aggresion under control and fight against time.
Interesting.
