Her new album ‘hopeless fountain kingdom’ is an atmospheric smash that showcases the young artist’s ability to command an audience.

Rolling Stone

Halsey shows off all her wild musical ambitions on Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, a bold second album that consolidates all the strengths of her 2015 debut Badlands.

NME
'Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’ might be defiantly ambitious, but it’s surprisingly cohesive.

Consequence of Sound

Ultimately, she knows the pitfalls of dating more than one gender better than anyone in pop, and those moments of insight are when Hopeless Fountain Kingdom truly stands out from the pack, but it’s also reassuring that Halsey (who tags herself “alternative” rather than “pop”) conceives herself as an album artist first.

70
AllMusic

Hopeless Fountain Kingdom as a whole feels quintessentially 2017 in how it jumbles styles and sentiment, streamlining a teeming, contradictory culture into something smooth, glassy and easy to digest.

65
Pitchfork

The concept is ambitious, but the product ticks all the boxes: staid piano ballad (“Sorry”), In the Zone nostalgia (“Walls Could Talk”), R&B dilettantism (“Don’t Play,” Quavo-assisted “Lie”), recreations of proven hits (“Now or Never”).

60
The Guardian

It’s not remotely bad; it certainly sounds just like one of the most hotly awaited pop albums of 2017. But you can discern, just off stage, the chorus of unignorable industry types bearing down on one bankable creative, advising this timely collaboration, that hot producer, this set of references.

The Line of Best Fit

Halsey may not have found the sound that will define the next stage of her career on Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, but by finding intermittent success with several of them she proves to have more versatility than her previous solo outings indicated.

The Observer

PopMatters

Where Badlands established Halsey as one of the more talented and dynamic artists of her generation, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is both overambitious in theory and mundane in practice.

Usually, when musicians change their sound to explicitly become radio-friendly, their music becomes worse. This isn’t the case with Halsey. While I thought BADLANDS, her debut album, was alright, I didn’t think it was worth the hype. Due to that, I would’ve avoided hopeless fountain kingdom had I not read Halsey claiming that “[she is] more than capable of writing radio music... and hopefully [she’ll] put [her] money where [her] mouth is on [hopeless fountain ... read more

I must admit I was expecting something worse. I wasn't a fan of her debut album BADLANDS, I thought the production and lyrical content was very rigid and stuck to a same palette, it didn't stead out to me and many of these problems traslate to hopeless fountain kingdom. Halsey interpolates a personal story with Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, however that concept seems to only live through her tweets because if I hadn't read it I would've never guessed it while listening the album. There are ... read more

I mean it definitely could be worse, but that doesn't mean that I love this record. It has some qualities to it, like Halsey's vocals and the production are great, but some of these songs are songs that are made, and some ended up being, to chart in the top 40, like Eyes Closed and Now or Never.

And one more thing, there's a YouTuber called Reacts by Ash, and she needs to chill tf out about this album, the bitch really started crying because of it...
