Carti is focused more on the energy of his records rather than the deeper meaning. Nevertheless, the rapper delivers a debut opus indicative of his brand, where good vibes, an escape from reality and flexing can be found.

Pitchfork

The young Atlanta rapper’s debut mixtape finds a cloudy and economical mood and stays there, but it’s Carti’s magnetic confidence that turns just enough into plenty.

PopMatters

Playboi Carti ... does not break new ground ... but as an exercise in the millennial id delivered in Cam’ronian laziness, it’s sure a hell of a lot of fun.

There’s not much range here, just an excess of swag, but it’s worth a listen solely for the moments where Carti seems to accidentally stumble upon a wild flow (“Dothatshit!”), or an irresistible infection (“Half & Half”).

Damn, that look like 'Shanti.

Damn, that look like Carti. I think that be Yung Carti"

Yeah, what, what
You cannot hop in my car
Bentley coupe riding with stars (Yeah, what, what)
I keep a Glock like a cop (Ayy, yeah)
She give the top in the drop (Yeah, ayy)
Diamonds they wet on my arms
Tats on my neck and my arms. Addictive upbeat trap music, minimalistic lyrics but catchy and fun. The features on this slap, Lil Uzi and Playboi have an amazing way of working together. Peak Trap

In a lot of respects, Playboi Carti's self-titled mixtape sounds like him trying to figure what works for him and what doesn't, mostly with mixed results. On this project, if you find the beat and Carti's flows cool when a song starts, then you better be ready to hear him doing the same thing on it for 3+ minutes. That being said, Carti does this really well on the first half of this tape, from "Location" to "New Choppa" every song is cloudy, very simple, but infectious, and ... read more
