The NYC-by-Nashville singer/songwriter’s latest is a smart, sexy thinkpiece on queer romance in a world on fire.
83
Northern Transmissions

Katy Kirby has delivered an album as raw and as rooted in reality as a collection of love songs can get in 2024.

Beats Per Minute

Blue Raspberry is Kirby’s most pointed, honest, and resonant self. There’s heaviness everywhere, and it should be excavated in doses. Still, her voice remains in bloom, providing a levity that yet again makes a Katy Kirby listening experience a comforting one.

80
AllMusic
Although Kirby doesn't back off of distortion pedals on the closer, "Table," the album's generally warmer textures are evident on songs including the fingerpicked and cello-accompanied "Party of the Century".
80
Sputnikmusic
A playfulness that, on the one hand, gives greater depth to Kirby's music—or otherwise make that depth more obvious to the shallow listener—but also, on the other, reemphasises to you—to me—just how good, how delicate, how thoughtful a songwriter Kirby really is at her core.
80
The Line of Best Fit

Although a pitched-down voice looms behind her as she sings, echoing that typically masculine tradition she first sought to embody, "Blue Raspberry" is nothing but achingly earnest.

80
Uncut

Kirby's second is more cosmopolitan than 2021 Cool Dry Place, with bandmates Alberto Sewald's and Logan Chung's muted soft rock production shifting her halfway toward Weyes Blood's polished indie folk.

80
Mojo
Lurching guitar, chiming piano and stabs of overdubbed choral harmony are combined with vocals that swing from sweetly intimate to dry and flippant.
80
The Observer
The Texas singer-songwriter makes up for time lost to her evangelical background with a second album of impeccable craft and lyricism.
80
Dork
Conveying the emotion of each track through manipulating momentum emphasises every layer. Each instrument and texture gets its moment to shine; the production is anything but simple – it is beautiful in its meticulousness.
74
Pitchfork
The Nashville singer-songwriter’s second album is a deft and subtly surprising inquiry into romantic illusion.
70
Under the Radar

In spite of its pondering otherwise, Blue Raspberry is as real as it gets and in its most composed moments a confident step forward.

70
Loud and Quiet
The album’s strength is its overall lack of flourish: it’s an unceasing blend of boredom, charm and anxiety – and always innately human.
70
Clash

The fact that a first spin inspires a kind of relaxed inattention just makes ‘Blue Raspberry’ more of a slow burn, one which rewards listeners who come back for more.

60
The Skinny

On Blue Raspberry, Katy Kirby is funny, scathing and full of clarity about her personal epiphanies.

I love how this website uncovers little gems that I would otherwise have never stumbled across. Beautiful album

Where are my raspberry fans up in here

Okay okay we got some nice lil ol singer songwriter folky shenanigans here. It’s definitely a solid listen! Verrrryyy nice vocals, super soothing honestly. There are some more interesting takes on this sound as well, especially with the first track and the burst of noise that caught me off guard. The last track Table is more indie rock which was a nice surprise as well. Not the most mind blowing thing but super nice on the ears and an enjoyable ... read more

absolutely gorgeous production with an un-extraordinary voice and solidly well written songs. Overall, a really solid album that I'll probably come back to occasionally

This album is my evidence which proves sitting & pondering is, in fact, a hobby. Gimme a cigarette, a good window, and this album, and watch how much I yearn. Hell, I might even pine a little too. Great job Queen Kirb.

The instrumentation is so incredibly dull and bland that I can't care to enjoy anything else.

soft indie rock that was greatly unexpected
