AllMusic

The main directive of the album is paisley jangle … but the Umbrellas stretch their sound in all directions as Fairweather Friend plays out, calling on various corners of indie pop history yet translating it all into their own songwriting language.

No Ripcord

Fairweather Friend is a great record, a genre standout deserving of adoration and acclaim beyond the niche of specialist blogs and, let’s be honest, the No Ripcords of the world.

Arresting, yet often unexpected, ‘Fairweather Friend’ pilfers from the indie pop lineage, while daring to stamp out a unique identity of its own.

Fairweather Friend showcases The Umbrellas at their best, reflecting growth, sophistication, and a captivating musical journey. Ooh la la!

Spectrum Culture

On Fairweather Friend, The Umbrellas approach the subject of time, reflecting on life’s shortcomings with enough lightheartedness to mask their cynicism.

Almost good, but not bad, just not as good as it could've been.

brain-shaking jangle pop with much heavier bass and more strident guitar than is the norm in this genre. decent musicianship makes the songs bearable, but there is a retread feel to much of it. their comparisons are allegedly The Pastels and Orange Juice, but to my ear there is a huge gap between those two bands. on the whole it is not terrible, but something feels off.

A lovely little twee pop album that is, at times, very reminiscent of K Records and Beat Happening. I love the jangle pop influences here and the general earnest quality of the album makes it a very refreshing listen. There aren't any proper "bangers" on this album, but the sound is consistent, beautiful and very wholesome.
