The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies.

Rolling Stone

The best word to summarize The Notorious Byrd Brothers is transitional. It was also their first record to exhibit overt country leanings - by the Sixties' end, everybody was getting back to the country, but the Byrds were there first, and on Notorious Byrd Brothers you can hear them saddling up the horses.

A band whose entire catalog seemed to come out in 1968, The Byrds have all sorts of different sides to them. Notorious shows us only one: Pot-smoking music.
