CRITIC REVIEWS

Drowned in Sound

After three previous albums, Moonshine Freeze is finally the sound of a storyteller of a musician finding her niche. And it is a joy to behold.

GIGsoup
‘Moonshine Freeze’ is an intelligent, powerful record with more than enough depth – especially lyrically – to not only stand up to but even encourage repeat listens.
80
Mojo

Fans of Sufjan Stevens’s Carrie & Lowell should fall for Bullet Proof and Easy On The Thieves, and throughout Moonshine Freeze there’s a similarly gratifying sense of a capable artist raising the alt-folk bar.

80
Clash

This is an album that deserves big headphones and large sweeping views of grey coastal days. With themes of folklore and oracles, This is The Kit provide the mysterious and whispering antidote to a world that can sometimes feel too obvious and loud.

80
Paste

Moonshine Freeze is the peak of an uphill path Stables has traced since her earliest recordings at the turn of the decade.

80
musicOMH

There may not be a big crossover hit on the album, but that doesn’t stop Moonshine Freeze sounding like the best record of Kate Stables’ career so far.

80
The Line of Best Fit

Moonshine Freeze is an album that sparkles with exuberance and energy, but it also subtly and steadily gives up its deeper secrets.

73
Pitchfork

With many of its songs assuming the form of chants or intonations, Moonshine Freeze feels proudly out of step with time. Stables largely eschews traditional song structures for a more intuitive logic, mirroring the in-between states her words invoke.

70
Exclaim!

One lyrical misstep in "By My Demon Eye" (the use of the ethnic slur "gypsy") disrupts Stables' otherwise charming lyrics, but otherwise, Moonshine Freeze is a uniquely woven tapestry of captivating beauty.

70
AllMusic

While the record may fall slightly short of Bashed Out's high benchmark and its plethora of exceptional melodies, Moonshine Freeze remains a fine addition to This Is the Kit's already excellent back catalog.

70
Loud and Quiet
There is some darkness here, with shadows lurking in the lyrics, but for the most part Stables has still created a record with a big heart and a desire to embrace magpie influences.
70
Crack Magazine

Moonshine Freeze is This Is the Kit’s most accomplished work to date, and even those turned off by the wider net they cast here should at least find folky comfort in the likes of Easy on the Thieves.

60
The Skinny

It all leads to Moonshine Freeze being an enjoyable if low-key listen that consolidates rather than shakes Stables’ current status.

60
The Guardian
Listened to loud, these songs drift warmly away on the air, but up close, Stables’ voice burrows into the ears, sounding direct and sweet, like a dear old friend you’re reconnecting with, or a more grounded Cat Power.

A low-key, largely acoustic and finger-picked folk album that sees Kate Stables playing to her strengths. The word “quirky” is definitely in play here, and it summarizes what I see as some of the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the album. Quirk works best when deployed for a reason, and a few of the more precious choices fall flat or don’t hold up on repeated listens. Luckily, there is much more to “Moonshine Freeze” than pointless quirk, and at her best, she ... read more
