A decently good early 90s alternative rock album with grunge undertones. I really am not a big fan of the grunge style that much but this album appealed to me.
I’m glad I decided to return to this after a rough first listen because I’m not exactly sure what I was thinking. Sure, Greg Dulli’s nasally voice takes some getting used to, but Gentlemen is the rare 90s rock break-up record that plumbs the depths of a singer’s angst and bitterness while also maintaining a certain awareness of their own shortcomings. I remember the first time I heard Gentlemen, I was in college and up to that point it was the most terrifying song I’d ever heard. That “now” before the song kicks in at the beginning remains one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard. Only now am I giving this entire album a fair shake and it holds up pretty well! That being said, Gentlemen is the obvious standout; I think it stands in a class of its own.
NOW! This album is one of the best in grunge. It doesn't miss either. I listen to this in winter and it honestly fits the cold depressing vibe for me. The closing track is beautiful and depressing at the same time. The emotional moments are also good with "My Curse" which almost feels like an end-credits song in itself. Overall, splendid.
