Vol. 1 meets between the commercial success of Vol. 2 and the lyrical focus of Reasonable Doubt.

When it avoids falling too far into the shininess of late-90's hip hop production this is a very solid album. He's lyrically at about the same level he was on Reasonable Doubt, and he does sound fine over the flashier production, but rather than just going into full hit mode as he would on later albums, he tries to making street songs out of beats that only a rapper like Biggie could possibly make a street song out of. Aside from City is Mine, A Million and One Questions, Sunshine, Imaginary Players, and a Too $hort feature, a bit of a dud as a sophomore album.
