Villains is like a machine that starts off working really well but after three songs, it starts to jam up. So, you whip out your trusty offbrand WD-40, BadSongBeGone-40, and get to spraying. And then it works!... for like one more song, after which you have to reapply it because it keeps on jamming up.

Damn I haven't been this bored listening to a rock record in a while, the squeaky clean production here ruined it for me, I couldn't get into a single groove on this whole album honestly.

While I take issue with some of the mixing, especially with the drums (you don't get Jon Theodore behind the kit just to neuter him. You just don't), that's really my only gripe with Villains. I do really love these songs, especially after hearing some of them live. That said, hearing them live makes me drool over how groovy and ferocious this could've sounded with some better production choices.

A fairly standard yet smooth rock album, by no means the band's best work but still an album worth hearing.

Best Track: Fortress
Worst Track: The Evil Has Landed

I can't help but love this thing. I know this shouldn't be my favorite Queens of the Stone Age album, but it is. Sorry lol

A little bit of blues, a little bit of groove, and a lot more mainstream appeal, Queens of the Stone Age's seventh album gets hit with a lot of negative attention from some of their fans and perhaps for some good reason. One of the best qualities of a Queens of the Stone Age album is that it is not necessarily so clean - instead full of raw, filthy sound. Villains simply doesn't have that grime on its sleeve, instead washing off the stink and putting on a new shirt that doesn't quite fit as ... read more

The band continues to surprise me with their consistency. Villains may have duds in the production, but it's still a fun pop-rock album with great moments. The album could've been better off with some abrasive guitar riffs, and less of the very clean ones on songs like "The Way You Used to Do", and overall the lyricism doesn't match the album's predecessor. Some of the parts are quite boring, and Josh doesn't do the slower moments enough justice, which is surprising because he's a ... read more

This album is good. Not their best work, but good. This was actually my introduction to Queens, and I saw them on the Villains tour. The song that made me fall in love with them was The Evil Has Landed. This album is nice and good, but it doesn't go above and beyond. Still some really great tunes though. Feet Don't fail me now is a great opener, and has a really awesome bouncy feeling to it. Domesticated Animals is really catchy and has a sweet guitar riff and some really cool themes revolving ... read more

An overall solid effort from the group. It goes without saying some of the bands best songwriting is on this record. Notably on songs like the super danceable and progressive grooves on "Feet Don't Fail Me" and "The Evil Has Landed". Some of the ballads too like "Villains of Circumstance" and "Fortress" are fantastic as well. But the production is really what brings the record down for me. Some of the guitar tones on this can be really grating and almost ... read more

This album really made me upset, not because it's upsetting but because it really isn't QOTSA.

Since the big amount of positive reviews I'd seen about QOTSA works, I decided to give this a try. Certainly not the best pick but I just got seduced by the cover.

To be a Rock record It was unnecessarily long and bland. Every song felt endless, including my favorite tracks on this feel way too long. By the other hand, the vocal performance didn't inspire me anything (exciting or amusing) at all, and despite being an album focused on evil, at no time I had the vibes that I think they wanted to ... read more

Queens of the Stone Age have come a long way from their hard rock anthems that made them so likeable two decades ago. Villains is not another Songs For The Deaf. It’s not another ...Like Clockwork. It is its own thing. A groovy and catchy list of songs that you can’t help move to.

Songs like The Way You Used To Do and Head Like A Haunted House are fast-paced dancerock songs that I always move to, while songs like Fortress and Hideaway take you back in your seat and almost forces ... read more

Some of there best mixing on any of their albums but also some of the flattest production. The closer is easily my favourite track on this thing as it feels more in tune with the tracks on Like Clockwork than any of the others. The rest just feels squeaky clean, bloated and a bit regressive considering this is just after their most intriguing album.

This album is underrated. Do i think its a flawless piece of music? No. But still this is a very good album

Great sequel for Like A Clockwork, Homme again makes a amazing job.

It's not bad. Far from it. But there feels like there is something missing in this dance-filled, boogie woogie infused collection of rock bangers that keeps it from being an all time classic. Maybe it's the strangely tinny rhythm section, or the misplaced production, but something definitely feels fishy.

Favorite Jams: Head Like A Haunted House, The Evil Has Landed, Feet Don't Fail Me

Lest Favorites: Hideway

This one definitely grew on me.
Favourites from the first listen: Feet don't fail me now, Hideaway, Head Like A Haunted House.

Favourite after a few: Un-Reborn Again <3 and The Evil Has Landed.

Edit: I surprise myself with the insane amount of times I have listened to this album since it came out. I have to admit it, I am in love with what Homme and company have achieved here. Rating: from 78 to 88.

Disclaimer: Leaked Listen (if there is a big difference in sound, this album could be an 88 or so tbh if its as intricate as ...Like Clockwork then this album is a hit. I definitely caught myself unconsciously trying to turn up the volume despite it being on max close to the end of the album)

Its Queens, as we've always known them, swaggered, groovy and sad. Its a good album but it doesn't reach the same heights as ...Like Clockwork.

Its definitely a grower of an album despite being only 9 ... read more

This album truly shows the growth of the band as a whole. Overall I would rate this very highly because of the composition components of the tracks, mixing of the tracks, musicianship and growth of each song.

Starting off with Feet don’t fail me now; The longest intro queens have ever produced captivates the listener through a hypnotic section which juggles between dark sounds reminiscent of the band’s earlier work and newer brighter sounds foreshadowing the direction band is ... read more

Eh... there are better queens albums out there. This one has some catchy hooks and melodies but the production is outright AWFUL for a queens album it actually sucks almost everything QUEENS out.

Sounds like Homme swallowed a bit too much sand from the desert this time, cuz this record is dry...

Along with its cringey music videos, it seems like the edge has truly become blunt for the Queens this time around. (the arctic monkeys effect)

Queens Of The Stone age, aged well. Far from their best but still a great record. The riffs are catchy as always, melodies get stuck in your ears and you can dance your ass off.
