When a new artist sings the blues without pop-driven gimmicks, she can’t miss. Erykah Badu’s nouvelle-soul debut, Baduizm, hits the target, blows it up, reinvents it.

Though many fans would dislike (and probably misinterpret) the comparison, she's closer to Diana Ross playing Billie Holiday -- as she did in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues -- than Holiday herself.

Baduizm was produced by, among others, newcomer Madakwu Chinwah and the Philadelphian rap instrumentalists Roots, who know something about making hip-hop with an organic feel. But Badu, of course, is the real focus here: Baduizm showcases the heart and soul of a bohemian B-girl who happens to have an effortless jazz swing.

I am a mysoginist. There is nothing special about my opinion. I do not and I will never in my life understand the meaning of this album. My opinion on women's art is invalid. I shall stick to being an OutKast and Bowie stan where there's plenty of manly manliness, a sausage-fest if you will. It's a position that more or less caters to my experience 💔
Till this day, Baduizm is still a neo-soul masterpiece that takes Erykah badu thoughtful lyrics, smooth and detailed sounds to reaching success.
Erykah Badu's debut is an essential classic Neo-Soul record with powerful vocals and amazing lyrics and with enough texture within the production and sound of the record to keep it fresh throughout and on re listens keep Baduizm as one of the better soul records of the 90's
