Throughout it all, A Flame My Love, A Frequency resonates with a healing warmth that is a testament to the remarkable purity of Colleen's music, as well as to the importance of beauty and hope when life is hard.

Resident Advisor

The brush with tragedy that inspired A Flame My Love, A Frequency likely brought this urge into sharper focus, and it's resulted in Colleen's most immediate and affecting LP to date.

Tiny Mix Tapes
Although the album expresses positive affect in the light of negative events, it delves so much deeper and wider than that worn cliché of a trajectory, inviting the listener into expanding and contracting gyres more ambiguous and more gorgeous in being thus.
By feeding her perceptions of a vast, uncaring universe through these tiny, delicate sounds, Schott comes closer than most to capturing our vulnerability as living creatures—animal or human—and the senselessness of suffering.
The 405

Ultimately, A flame my love, a frequency is an intimate voyage of a single human soul through nature, and the minimalistic synth compositions she has used to render this prove to be an ideal vessel.

Under The Radar

There are definite parallels with Ekstasis period Julia Holter, but Schott is less fussed for easy-eared melodies. Instead she makes her mark through kaleidoscopic waltzes like "Another World" and the title track's droning, ethereal haze. And while that doesn't always make it an easy listen, it's hard not to admire her ambition.

There’s so much cold in Colleen’s music, that the opening song feels like a November winter idyll. There’s coziness, there’s waves, there’s quiet beauty, sparse and ethereal. Through the detachment, each of these songs grow and stay and feel reliable in the space they occupy. Until it just stops.

I don’t get it. I don’t understand the music; I can’t imagine the intended audience. Most of it was like someone found some way to create a particular tone, and then they decided to see how many ways they could alter, twist, and distort the sound. I found nothing of interest here for me.
