Taylor’s songs are warm and well-worn. His band moves as a single organism. His lyrics are a dense tangle of knowing encouragement and artful allusions, and his sandpaper drawl pours out effortlessly.

The Line of Best Fit

You could say there’s not an original musical idea anywhere to be seen on Hallelujah Anyhow and be 100% accurate. But you’d be totally missing the point and with it the album’s immense, irresistible charm.

A.V. Club

Even if the record isn’t an explicit political protest, it’s certainly reflective of a deliberate choice by Taylor to strive for hope rather than wallowing in despair. In that respect, Hallelujah Anyhow is an unqualified success, and a significant leap forward for Hiss Golden Messenger.

Hallelujah Anyhow is another outstanding exercise in record making from Hiss Golden Messenger, and it's recommended to loyal fans and curious neophytes alike.

There is something comforting in the contradictions Taylor explores on Hallelujah Anyhow, something that speaks generally to what it means to be a conscientious and compassionate citizen at a time when every day seems to introduce some new travesty.

God Is in the TV
We’re talking upbeat Americana, often short and sweet with a sentimental traveller’s tone but fans of the band will already be familiar with Taylor’s way with an introspective narrative and slightly jaunty musical twist.

As long as life carries on and the darkness exists, the world needs messengers of hope. Hiss Golden Messenger deliver that here on Hallelujah Anyhow, making it relevant regardless of time and place.

I still think Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor is talented, but he's treading in a well-worn format of folk singer-songwriter fare, and though his work on "Hallelujah Anyhow" is serviceable, there's very little to recommend it over other contemporaries, or even his previous project "Heart Like A Levee." "Hallelujah Anyhow" appeared only a year after that album, and it scans a bit slight, as though more time should've been devoted to these songs to make them more ... read more

Not going to give an in depth review here because I listened to this on a long sunday drive and didn't take notes, however, I did like some of the songs but the majority sounded like D side Dylan rip offs.
