Over the past seven years and change, during which he has released five LPs, a handful of EPs, and delivered a slew of features on tracks by a veritable who’s-who list of underground hip hop luminaries, Michael W. Eagle II, aka Open Mike Eagle, has established himself as indie rap’s pre-eminent social critic, a bona fide rap trope deconstructionist, and one of the funniest emcees in the game. On his latest full length, Michael Eagle dials back the quippy humour that has ... read more

Brick Body Kids Still Daydream is an excellent journey. Mike Eagle seems to be telling me many stories with this album and I highly enjoy just about each one. This album makes me feel relaxed especially with Mike's soft and calming voice. This album also just paints the image of talking with a friend over drinks and trading life stories and giving each other the feeling of empowerment. A highly enjoyable and relaxing album that I would recommend.

A great addition to Mike's discography, but definitely doesn't live up to the buzz surrounding this album.

Ups:

-Each song lives off of one another, a very well constructed album
-Unique ( I really enjoyed the "silent like ice bear" line)
-Good features (each artist fits in the world created here)
-Brick Body Complex

Downs:

-Introspective albums should be void of ego, it just doesn't translate well, vulnerability is what is wanted here.
-Humble bragging (some goofy shit just ... read more

This is open mike eagle 6th album to date and his most personal yet. Brick Body kids still daydream deals with the demolition of the housing projects in Chicago and how it affected thousands of families. This is definitely a unique take of a hip-hop concept. I've been following Mike's career ever since his LP "dark comedy" and still to this day he hasn't released anything sub-par. This is perhaps the most thought-provoking and impactful hip-hop album this year along. The Content of ... read more

This is the one where I felt it all came together perfectly. The production is more subdued than past efforts, which complements Mike's low-key delivery better. The record has a clear concept that it doesn't stray from and it's very personal. This causes there to be less of those trademark OME one-liners that we like to tweet out, but this record is a bonafide masterclass in conceptual art rap.

Mike's most nuanced and detailed work to date. Although I love all of his albums, this one in particular has really creeped up on me and I do think that many who thought this was boring at first will find more to love on further listens. Mike as a rapper maintains his comedic edge, but it seems that there is much more to each bar than a punchline. He manages to create these detailed and absurd depictions of post-apocalyptic worlds and subtly compares them to real world locations, areas like the ... read more

ok I tried but this is just such a snoozer for me. I guess I dont like real hip hop. This may grow on me some day

This is my favourite hip hop album of the year, the way he embodies every song is excellent, getting real views into mentalities and lives in the public housing complex of his aunt in Chicago, which was torn down in 2007, destroying histories, displacing thousands of families, and with little regard for any impact. As such this album honours them in many ways, the anger and the hope, the individual masks and the communal feeling, the loving and the painful destruction of community, home and ... read more

Beautiful album. Has a really old school feel to it. The chill vibe it has reminds me a lot of the Jazz Rap wave of the 90s.
Great production, great lyrics. Hell, what else can I say? It's beautiful and beautifully made. Strong contender for (hip-hop at least) AOTY.

Highlights: Legendary Iron Hood, (How Could Anybody) Feel At Home, Hymnal, Brick Body Complex

This was a decent album, but I didn’t get all the superhero references. The first song apparently mentions several characters from the X-Men franchise, where the narrator constantly compares himself to Juggernaut. Some of the beats are good, and I like his voice, but I wasn’t engaged with his songs about his neighborhood.

BEST – 1, 9, 11

01. Legendary Iron Heel – 8 – A nice sound to his voice.
02. (How Could Anybody) Feel at Home – 7
03. Hymnal – 8 ... read more

This album left a hole in my soul. It goes from a subtle nostalgic song about trying to find a radio to an abrasive song about his childhood home being torn down. I was saddened by this.

among one of the more thoughtful and emotionally potent hip hop albums of the decade, open mike eagle's charmful and witty lyricism combined with very dark and chilling moments that can't help but pull at the listener's heartstrings make up an absolutely stunning project. it's not perfect however. there are songs ,like "wedding ghosts" for example, that pale in comparison to others in the soundtrack. not to say they're bad, but there is a noticeable shift in tone and quality from a ... read more

Open Mike Eagle delivers an amazing conscious hip-hop record of 2017 with Brick Body Kids Still Daydream. The rapper shows his unparallel lyrical ability with the record detailing his past experiences with the demolishment of his old project and his past memories. This combined with a very lowkey sound makes for one of Mike's best records yet.

Open Mike Eagle Creates an entire mythology through the Robert Taylor Homes and he creates something that will be remembered for years to come.

Best: All Except Wedding Ghosts
Worst: Wedding Ghosts

Definitely Open Mikes most introspective record yet, focusing on a child in Chicago who's life and home is crumbling, Open Mike cuts the comedy and tells this amazing story which ends in tragedy, would be a 100 if not for wedding ghosts. A classic in rap and the best hip hop album of 2017.

A concept never seen before has lead Open Mike Eagle more into the eyes of rap fans who choose to dig deeper then radio and XXL. Underground heads have known for years the greatness Eagle has lying in him, but this to me is a cementing of his skills into a go-to body of work.

What can I say at this point? Open mike is one of the most consistently good artists in hip-hop right now and this is just another well produced, well written and generally entertaining as hell release from him.
