"Poor David's Almanack", "The Harrow and the Harvest" and "A Friend of a Friend" are three mighty fine albums. I'm always on the look out for David's live shows, when he's in the zone his playing has to be seen to be believed.
For the past two decades, David Rawlings and Gillian Welch have been some of the most consistent fixtures of the alt-country/Americana scene, often transcending mere consistency to achieve something beautiful and (pardon the cliché) timeless. "Poor David's Almanack" is consistently solid, but the transcendental moments are more sparing here. This album has more in common with Gillian Welch's Soul Journey, and maybe The Harrow & the Harvest, than David Rawlings two previous albums as Dave Rawlings & The Machine. Excellent set of songs, with good variety and a healthy contribution from Welch.
