Least Favorite Track: Straight, No Chaser
This album is pretty innovative, but then again you could say the same of anything Monk ever did due to his extremely forward-thinking and sometimes obtuse seeming playing and compositional style. It constantly changes pace and tone, the playing is of course immaculate throughout (special shoutout to saxophonist Charlie Rouse who is sometimes unfairly shat on by people for some reason) and the songs are meandering for sure but distinctly sculpted in Monk’s own vision.
