This album looks, sounds, and feels like Bright Eye's proper debut album. Young Conor is such a treat and depending on my mood, this album is excellent.


Although this album is obviously not a perfect record, it sets the tone well for what is to be expected from Bright Eyes going forward, making this a successful debut overall. The quality is somewhat sketchy and unrefined in places, but it is far cleaner than might have been expected from early recordings by Oberst and in reality gives the album a decent dosage of personality.

While it's certainly more refined and consistent when compared to their first album, it lacks the same level of endearing lyrics and enjoyable instrumentation. However, Oberst's performance is really great as he puts loads of his energy into delivering these songs. My favorite track is June On The The West Coast.
