The Line of Best Fit

This is a record which likes to hurls surprises and you’re never entirely sure which direction they’re going to turn next.

The new Mastodon EP is an eclectic, psychedelic journey that sees guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds picking up a Sho-Bud 13-string pedal steel guitar. His mastery of the instrument is quickly clear.

Cold Dark Place is essential listening for any Mastodon fans who have followed the band into the 2010’s without an excess of griping. Folks who are still waiting for the group to go back and do another Leviathan or Blood Mountain, this maybe isn’t for you.

2017's ambitious full-length Emperor of Sand saw the progressive/sludge metal veterans delivering a heavy-hearted concept album about grief, and while Cold Dark Place's title would suggest an extension of that narrative, it's more of a loosely knit addendum that illuminates the latter outings' soul-searching proclivities by proxy.

Nicely done, a progressive, psychedelic journey through the form of four instrumentally-fantastic songs. The instrumentals are amazing, so I understand why they released these four songs. 13-string pedal guitars, psychedelic-y vocals, music and production, and nice harmony surprises. Good lyricism throughout too, I especially love the lyrics for "Toe to Toes." I adore this EP and think it's one of my personal favourites of the group.

i love the psychedelic and atmospheric mood that this EP makes you experience
The 2010s in my opinion, was a pretty weak decade for Mastodon. From the stripped back, The Hunter, and Once More Around the Sun, as well as Emperor of Sand, which to me just felt like a weak attempt of returning to their old sound. Mastodon then dropped Cold Dark Place, an EP released the same year as Emperor of Sand, which is composed of tracks that didn't make it onto that album. Going into this, I wasn't very excited, especially since it is just rejected cuts from one of my least favorite ... read more
This EP is a very interesting thing. It shows fans that Mastodon still have some kind of creative song writing ability left in them. This EP is a mix of very different tracks then what you would expect from a typical Mastodon album. Its creative, interesting, and feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the uninspired studio LPs we have gotten from them in the past 8 years or so. It still isn't what you would want to hear from Mastodon, but it does feel inspired and interesting. Its the ... read more
