The Alphas: bitter, affectionate, candid, aloof—most of all, not sure what to make of it all. That's the brilliance of John Darnielle: his storytelling resists generalized narratological moralism. A beautiful, heartbreaking - yet in the next breath, hilarious - masterpiece. The imagery on this thing is what makes the record so fantastic and the already great songwriting skills of John Darnielle greatly benefit from a full band backing.

found these guys after watching "you're the worst" and decided to give the album a go. what a lovely surprise! i really respect the themes tackled too - this sort of dysfunctional love which i think is absolutely fascinating.

This album is immediately cleaner and and a little less direct than the album before it, but with that comes positives and negatives. Although the record has a similar feeling in many ways, it incorporates far more musical elements throughout with the rest of the band backing, making this feel like a more complete album in comparison.
