God Is in the TV

Both volumes contain a very neat total of ten songs each, and confirm that Deer Tick have risen gracefully from humble beginnings to become one of the sharpest bands on the block. This is perhaps even their finest hour.


Unpretentious and unpolished, Deer Tick continue to confront the rigours of life with unapologetic candidness on both volumes here.

For all the noticeable gains Deer Tick has made in its songwriting in recent years, Vol. 2 offers sufficient proof that it hasn’t lost its raw nerve.

Unlike Vol. 1, which ran out of steam during its last third, Vol. 2 keeps its momentum from beginning to end, clattering and shambling through its 33 minutes without a false step.

Vol. 2’s electric tracks display more charmingly self-effacing awareness and introspection than the performative misbehavior of 2011’s album-length lost weekend Divine Providence

Largely unchanged in their decade of existence, Deer Tick fill a niche in the intersection of Americana and indie rock that may at first seem composed of generic parts, but adds up to an ultimately unique sum. Both this and Vol. 1 work hand in hand. Which ever one is better is up in the air, they both offer different sounds. But the two of them back to back makes a varied and interesting hour or so of music and I'm more than willing to go back to both.
