A shorter and more consistent release for Porcupine Tree. While they do stick to their sound, Fear of a Blank Planet is a lot more industrial, and also probably their heaviest. Lyrically this is easily their most straightforward, and seemingly simple, but this does play well into the concept of the album. FOABP deals with the protagonist, who is a manic depressive teenager, who gets darker and more chaotic as the album goes on. To me, it's their best record. There's a depressive, dark and ominous feeling to most of the sound, but not in submissive/saddening manner. Love the agression and how much meat these riffs and drumms pack on the bone. Very well conterbalanced with passages of spacy and beautiful instrumentals guided by more of a prog soundscape when they arrive. It's really impressive that they're able to keep a 15-plus minutes song engaging at all times too...nothing overstates its welcome here.
