In an era when psychedelic meanderings were the order of the day, Yes delivered a surprisingly focused and exciting record that covered lots of bases (perhaps too many) in presenting their sound.

GREAT

There’s a lot more psychedelic rock and folk rock going on in Yes’s 1969 debut than there is in any other Yes album, and that’s a good thing. It gives it its own sound and identity, and it’s a fun listen through and through. It’s full of energy and is the sound of an exciting young band with nothing to lose.

Pretty good debut, every track is at least a 70/100. The thing I really like about this album is that it’s super consistent, it didn’t get boring at times, it didn’t get bad at times, it was just consistently good, the obvious highlight is survival, but I also enjoy looking around and yesterday and today. Overall: very solid debut

I See You: way better. That progression and Peter Banks’s tone sound really awesome. And the vocals sound great. This track is a banger and I’m loving ... read more

Album Review #65

Another Yes album... the first Yes album (although the eighth that I've decided to review). Not "The Yes Album", but just "Yes". Let's get that much out of the way. It sounds like this should be called "The Yes Album" instead of their third album, but I digress.

So this is the embryo of a progressive rock band, then. It features all five of the original members of the group (as would Time and a Word (1970)). Although not all the pieces ... read more
