In a fairer world, it would be authentic country artists like Whitney Rose that sold out arenas and dominated country radio, not the banal hat acts purveying their bro-country schlock, here and in the U.S.

From Rose to her crack band, all the performances on Rule 62 are delivered with a casual assurance that gives the record a warm feel that, when combined with sturdy songs from a variety of styles, gives the record the feeling of an old favorite; it feels like a record that you've lived with for years, in the best possible sense.

Whitney Rose sure knows how to lead off an album. “I Don’t Want Half (I Just Want Out)” is shockingly good, probably the best song of her career to date and a strong contender for best country song of the year. Nothing else quite scales this high bar, but “Rule 62” nonetheless finds a very enjoyable groove for itself.
