Simply put: this is an exceptional masterclass in music making. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed an album of this sort, and it’s mainly down to the fact he’s a musician in the know; he has the knowledge and the tools to attain what he wants.

While Voicenotes can be loosely classified as a fame-response album ... it counteracts Puth's artistic frustrations and in every aspect surpasses Nine Track Mind

Rolling Stone

While his efforts on Voicenotes are valiant, he still has a bit more work to prove he can cut his teeth with the Justin Timberlakes and the Nick Jonases of that over-saturated world.

After the beige offering of his debut, album two puts his stellar songwriting and cheeky lyrics front and centre, and in doing so, starts to carve him a place as a popstar in his own right.

Spectrum Culture

He’s not much of a horndog—but who is he? On an album that is supposedly more liberating, the artist should give us more of an idea.

The Young Folks

Puth definitely took a step forward artistically. There’s sprinkles of ambition and ingenuity all throughout Voicenotes. However, the songwriter’s lyrical limitations were exposed multiple times on creative choices that were obviously encouraged by the label.

Quick Comment: Some of the better commercial albums out there... then again probably isn't saying much

In 'Voicenotes', Charlie Puth seems more comfortable and natural, but still lacks creativity at times.
BEST TRACKS: The Way I Am • Attention • LA Girls • How Long • Done For Me • If You Leave Me Now • BOY

🥈 SILVER 6/10

This is an improvement. Better lyrics, production, everything. It's still incredibly basic, but at least it's not agonizingly painful like "Nine Track Mind".

"Voicenotes" is definitely an upgrade from Charlie's debut, however it still sounds like manufactured music for the radio.
