Performances throughout are at the least fine and at the most fantastic.

Starfish is an album that will disorient and fascinate; shaking its spell will not be easy.


I feel similarly about this album as I do about the most popular release by fellow Aussies The Go-Betweens - with that band I prefer the more idiosyncratic 'Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express' over the much lauded and neater '16 Lovers Lane' and here I prefer the more wigged out 90s stuff.

That's not to say this isn't a very consistent set and in particular the first two songs are close to perfect.

This was my introduction to The Church. On one particular drive home in the night, my mother put on "Under The Milky Way" and the rest was history. As for the record outside of that song, I don't think enough credit goes to "Destination" and "Lost," both as magical as the aforementioned hit, as well as the wonderfully dirty "Blood Money."
