American Songwriter
It’s not just a rousing bookend to a remarkable, late-starting career, but a terrific and moving soul explosion that stands as one of the finest in her limited yet extraordinary catalog.

Northern Transmissions
While so many soul and funk records these days feel like they’re missing something, even ones from the greats, Jones leaves the world with a record that should be heard by everyone, and will no doubt become a modern touchstone for the genre.

Exclaim!

Soul of a Woman is a more than worthy farewell by one of the hardest working and talented women show business has ever known

Soul Of A Woman offers up a piece of everything that made Jones a powerhouse up to the very end.

The 405

Soul of a Woman cements itself as a fitting send-off for a woman who flat-out owned the stage and spearheaded a scene, transcending the notions of “neo” and “revival” to make music that was impassioned and pure. Sharon Jones lives on every time you press play.

The Independent
Throughout, Jones’s characteristic optimism holds true.

Slant Magazine
The loving details with which she and her band fill these songs transcend the same R&B clichés they reinforce.

Rolling Stone
Recorded over her last two years with longtime sidemen, genre-masters all, Jones meets darkness with hope on this denouement.

AllMusic
This isn't just a fitting farewell to Sharon Jones; it's one of the best albums of her career.

The entire album ... is a poignant statement of the determination that motivated her all along.

The Needle Drop

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings' final record is a celebration of everything that made the soul revivalists great since their inception in the early '00s.

Clash
After years of trying her hand at various jobs, whether it was a prison officer or van guard, thankfully Jones found her calling as a true soul artist, singing songs about heartbreak, empowerment, love and enduring strength.

Consequence of Sound
Rather than dwelling on her illness or attempting to put a bow on a career cut short, her final studio album finds her doing what she always did: singing with such force and fire that it’d be impossible not to listen.

A.V. Club

The first half of Soul Of A Woman is a powerful final encore for the late Sharon Jones, showcasing the dizzying array of soul and funk styles that she and the Dap-Kings crew perfected over the last 20 years. But after the James Brown frenzy of its opening tracks and the less memorable Motown-inspired middle ground, the album changes course.

The record return you back with the 80s vibes and make you feel that you are dancing in an old bar or something just like this, all you have to do is just close your eyes.

Jones always delivered, to quote Jon Pareles, "genre-perfect old-school soul." This final album is no exception. It's a solid collection that holds its best cuts for the latter half.

Favorite tracks: Girl! (You Got To Forgive Him), Come and Be a Winner, These Tears (No Longer for You)

Yet another solid soul album, these songs are accompanied by a voice with a lot of power and personality, even more so with the knowledge of Jones’ passing. What’s wild is her facing death and still confidently chunking out these bangers, void of any fear or grimness.
