The Independent

His vocals may not be to everyone’s taste, but they stand out, as does the album, and that sums up Grennan pretty perfectly. They don’t make them like him anymore.

‘Lighting Matches’ is a record that makes Bedford sound like Hollywood. Whether he gets there on this record, time will tell. But there’s enough class and promise to at least meet his ambitions halfway. He knows what he’s doing.

‘Lighting Matches’ isn’t a bad album, but sadly it doesn't excel either. This isn’t what we’ve been looking for. It is a polished and pristine affair, but it all feels a little too rehearsed and sanitised in its delivery.

It's definitely nothing massively groundbreaking, but a certain wholesomeness throughout the entire record paired with a very distinctive vocal tone make it a unique and enjoyable experience all the way through.

One of my favourite albums of last year, I was already a bit of a fan but this album has cemented it for me.

Tom is just too confident and smooth with his delivery of his vocals to ignore.

What struck me instantly when listening to Tom Grennan was his unique vocals. This is his biggests asset but also his biggest problem as it can come across that he is a ‘one trick pony’ of sorts, but that isn’t the case.
This albums biggest failure is it’s production. Some of the songs may have been a little rushed, but all of the songs sound too flat. The guitars and brass instrumentation don’t strike you like they should, whereas the drums are way over dubbed, ... read more
