Prince's penultimate decent album. I have always thought that the best of Prince has been from 1979 to 1992, ending with Love Symbol Album, after that he derails and starts his fight with Warner Bros. stronger and stronger, then the name change to his already recorded symbol for posterity, all those turbulences that he had, are reflected in his music and he was no longer the same genius (in some way) tamed, who made him throw musical jewels. Prince and his latest group, The New Power Generation, create a record filled with smooth R&B and hip-hop hybrids, applying their fantastic instrumental abilities to a batch of sexy, jazz-enfused hits that make for one of the artist's most accessible records. "Dimonds And Pearls" shows Prince embracing the ideas of the mainstream (such as the newly-popular rap) and twisting them into his own, with an emphasis on horns, guitar parts and modest synth components that make this record ... read more
Unfortunately, Prince's entering into the rap realm was not very successful. This album is better than the previous two soundtracks, but it is underwhelming compared to Prince's 80s work. On the other hand, however, it offers some really good stuff as well, like Thunder, the title track, Gett Off, Money Don't Matter 2 Night and especially Cream, arguably the best track here.
Ratings here are deceptively low.
