The Skinny

There’s a buoyant urgency to proceedings, the kind of detail in the lyrics that let you know here is a person telling you stories of the world as they see them in a way that is fiercely meant.

With the future of Modern Baseball uncertain, Slaughter Beach, Dog might be our only outlet to hear Ewald’s idiosyncratic songwriting style. Beyond the necessity, Birdie is a record that teeters an indie/emo line with ease and a sense of hybridity.

The Line of Best Fit

Ewald’s writing is comprised of a number of observations that often appear fairly minor, collated into something that is at times quite evocative. There are moments however where it feels more uncoordinated, less refined, and unfortunately it is these points that prevent the record becoming the disarming gem it promises at times to be.

WOWWWW I fucking love this oh my god. What the hell. It’s so simple but effective. I checked out this record because I saw these guys live with Jeff Rosenstalk, and I had zero clue who they were. I remember not liking this record at all when it came out. I wish I could tell you why exactly, but after listening through Birdie all the way through again tonight, I have zero idea why I wouldn't like this.
