The Skinny

There’s a buoyant urgency to proceedings, the kind of detail in the lyrics that let you know here is a person telling you stories of the world as they see them in a way that is fiercely meant.

With the future of Modern Baseball uncertain, Slaughter Beach, Dog might be our only outlet to hear Ewald’s idiosyncratic songwriting style. Beyond the necessity, Birdie is a record that teeters an indie/emo line with ease and a sense of hybridity.

The Line of Best Fit

Ewald’s writing is comprised of a number of observations that often appear fairly minor, collated into something that is at times quite evocative. There are moments however where it feels more uncoordinated, less refined, and unfortunately it is these points that prevent the record becoming the disarming gem it promises at times to be.

Birdie acts as one of the most refreshing and content indie releases this year. While it can’t be hailed at Ewald’s magnum opus, it’s definitely a sure sign that he’s moving in the right direction to create his best work yet. Fans of Modern Baseball might be let down by the energy that Birdie carries, as it’s not very punk or emo based.
