Born from the cavernous depths of Doom Metal and and the visceral thrash of Hardcore Punk, Sludge Metal is incredibly aptly named. Crunchy riffs turn to a dark and viscous soup and like tar you find yourself trapped, sinking within, flailing around only causes you to get pulled under that much quicker, helpless next to prehistoric beasts.

Woah...I just listened to that. One of a handful of albums I can think of where the album cover matches the sound of the record. It's as colorful, wild and earth shattering as it looks. Makes me wanna finish Moby Dick for once.

Edit 2:Okay this is the best sludge metal album ever made. Everything works so well. The scope of this album is massive, and this album is abrasive as fuck. Blood and Thunder could power a city for 3 weeks because of how energy filled this song is. Hearts Alive is an ambitious closer, I Am Ahab is a pure storm of guitar and drums, Iron Tusk is an epic climax and Megalodon never lets up off the gas. MASTODON - "LEVIATHAN"

I go back & forth on which of their albums I regard as my number one favourite. I'm feeling it with Leviathan. It's a piece of music everybody should hear if you ask me. An absolute, beautiful, energetic, chaotic, brutal, sludgy, atmospheric, epic & heavy masterpiece & a half.
