While there are a small handful of decent songs and riffs on Catharsis, the vast majority is either hilariously edgy nostalgia or simply forgettable.

Catharsis’ 15 tracks prove that, nearly three decades into their career, Robb Flynn and co.’s inflammatory zeal remains intact. Their creative judgement? Not so much.

As one of my favorite bands of all time, it really hurts to see Machine Head fall like this. It hurts even more to know that they won't recover, what with their breakup and all.

First of all, who thought it was a good idea to go back to nu metal? Why? Bloodstone & Diamonds had a perfected groove/thrash sound that could have so easily be expound upon here. Why did they have to go back to their universally-reviled Burning Red era? But besides the nu metal whinery, this album just sucks in ... read more

It's a tough entry if you're a die hard Machine Head fan. I mean, to me, it's a very mixed bag. There are definitely more lows than highs but some songs are fucking killer, I've got to admit. But the experimentation is rather tedious and quite annoying, even, at times. Fucking nu metal-esque 2001 type bullshit, that sorta stuff. Some of the highlights are listed below:
