What's surprising about this album is that it isn't like From Mars to Sirius at all. It's still Gojira, but this album takes a very different death metal approach, which is sometimes way more progressive, but also way more death. It's a different style that they embrace here and while it is strong, it's not as powerful as From Mars was. Still definitely better than a lot of other death metal for sure.
They’re most technically sound and forward thinking album
Hands down the best Gojira album. From Mars To Sirus and Terra Incognita come close, but god DAMN this album was fantastic.
While, this does have some of my favorite metal songs ever on it, or rather favorite songs ever this definitely has some painfully obvious flaws. The biggest one is that "we're a prog metal band now, let's clean up our production a ton and make very long songs". Many of these songs are too long, like the occasionally cheesy Adoration For None and the 17 minute long closer, though that track just has a 10 minute period of silence in the middle. I didn't know what to expect from Gojira. Despite all of the great things I've heard being said about the band, I somehow managed to completely avoid any and all music from them. All I knew before listening to this was that they are a progressive death metal band from France. Considering I'm still fairly uneducated in both of these genres, I didn't know what I should expect from them, or if I'd even like them at all. I can now say with confidence that this is a masterpiece.
