Drowned in Sound

Hansard has shown depth and range, both in terms of songwriting and vocal performance, which sees this album as the one on which he finally and definitively finds his voice as a solo artist.


The production, simple and strong, makes the most of the fine work of Hansard and his associates, and all in all, Between Two Shores is an effort that will please his fans while showing he's still learning new tricks in the art of record making, and he's putting them to good use.

Between Two Shores is another Glen Hansard album filled with good songs, gorgeous music and gregarious singing. Is that enough? You decide.


Hansard’s haggard vocals are still doing most of the heavy lifting. They often bring much-needed weight to Between Two Shores’ thin ideas. But there’s only so much a single voice can do to keep a sinking album afloat.


These ten songs are all very listenable. Hansard is a good performer with a voice that is a charming combination of gritty and tuneful. But Between Two Shores isn't the kind of album where the individual songs are particularly memorable.

Glen dips into his love and appreciation for all things Van Morrison. He eschews his normal acoustic laments for a great collection of upbeat electric tunes. There's still enough of his trademark heartbroken troubadour present to assure the listener that he's still Glen and he's still got it. This is a must for fans of Glen and The Frames or even Van Morrison himself. It may well be a good place for an introduction to Glen's music as well.
