God Is in the TV
It’s an extraordinarily immersive listen and a record which continues to provide new sounds and feelings on every play.

The Line of Best Fit

Despite its flaws, Rare Birds is a rare find.

American Songwriter

Rare Birds is a strikingly original, complex and inspired work, one that requires your attention and rewards repeated spins.

80
Northern Transmissions
Though he has such a cutting lyricism and knack for melodies, he often filters this through tones of about 50 other classic artists that came before him.

AllMusic

Rare Birds is dizzying in ambition and (mostly) dazzling in execution. It offers hours of enjoyment to anyone who takes it on.

Exclaim!

It's clear that Jonathan Wilson's naked ambition has reached a zenith, for better and for worse, with Rare Birds.

60
The Observer

At times ... he is a little too soft for his own good. But Rare Birds is sprawling, rich and, by and large, a triumph, its cosmic mindset and focus on detail breathing drama into songs that in lesser hands might sound stale.

60
The Independent

The major problem ... concerns the sheer sonic density of what Wilson calls his new “maximalist” approach, in which up to 150 parts are blended into a single song. The lush opacity becomes claustrophobic over his eight-minute default track length: though frequently sweet and beautiful, one’s ultimately left like Heliogabalus, drowned in rose petals.

Under The Radar
Ultimately, there's too much of it and not enough of the tracks here are anything other than mediocre, indie singer/songwriter tunes that are as easily discarded as they appear to be easily written and produced.

Jonathan Wilson è un cantante, musicista e produttore che si è guadagnato un’invidiabile reputazione lavorando con artisti del calibro di Father John Misty (Pure Comedy) e Roger Waters (Is This The Life We Really Want?).
