Charli XCX’s latest mixtape is a vision of what pop music could be, the sound of an eclectic, hyperreal future where romantic love is fun but fucked and partying is an emotional refuge.
Consequence of Sound
By inflating pop music to its cartoonish extremes, Charli and her cohorts find something most artists don’t dare to look for: They find space between the boring and the uncomfortable, the pristine and the filthy, the sterile corporate origins of much radio pop, and the vibrant human spaces in which it’s consumed.
Charli’s second mixtape of the year isn’t just about proving she’s more than your average pop star, but about her settling into her role as innovator, celebrator, and curator supreme.
Crack Magazine

Led by Charli XCX on Pop 2, we catch a glimpse of electropop reaching adulthood.

Tiny Mix Tapes

For better or for worse, Charli XCX is embracing maturity on her fourth mixtape ... And though she may not find what she’s looking for anytime soon, Charli XCX, on Pop 2, is at least looking down a new path.

The 405

POP 2 is perplexing throughout. Cuts to silence and haphazard switching of rhythm make it constantly disorientating. With the exception of the chart beckoning 'Out of My head' with Tove Lo, every track here has the structure of subverted pop destined for the decades beyond.

This mixtape has no higher purpose than to let its creators run wild, showcasing their prodigious talents with frequent moments of pop brilliance.
The Needle Drop

Pop 2 is another welcome collaboration between Charli XCX and the PC Music camp.

edit: after further reconsideration, i think I've come to appreciate what this album has to offer. while i still don't love many of the songs, as i did with N1A, it's still a better body of work upon more listens. that needs to be taken into consideration. my initial review is still up though

it's chaotic and all over the place, mostly saved when charli xcx can get her own space. tracks like "Delicious" and "Femmebot" feel disrupted by their guests, who seem to have no ... read more

Charli XCX: "I'm not just a pop star, look how many indie artists and cool producers want to work with me!"

Messy, autotuned, robotic, and crazy, but who cares?

I love it!

The best Charli XCX project since Sucker, Pop 2 synthesizes all of her PC Music collaborations with her mainstream pop peers to form one of the best bubblegum bass projects the young genre has seen. This is off-kilter pop for those looking for a classic rush of dopamine without the predictability that usually comes with it.

Although I was a fan of her before she began her long-term relationship with the PC Music crowd, the direction that Charli XCX has taken since last year's Vroom Vroom EP has worked wonders for the quality of her music. Working with Sophie and A.G. Cook, among the many other producers, complemented her rebellious yet sweet attitude, and showed serious progression in her sound. Charli's Number 1 Angel tape from March presented a more hip hop oriented sound, bringing a small army of features to ... read more
