Clash
‘Could It Be Different?’ is arguably already one of the most important albums of 2018, despite coming just four weeks in. Accessible and utterly irresistible, its messages of optimism and of equality couldn’t have come at a more salient time, providing a voice to those that feel marginalised, and doing so with a smile and a raised middle finger. An early contender for album of the year.

The Line of Best Fit

With Could It Be Different? The Spook School are telling us that, yes, perhaps indie doesn't have to be like this after all.

GIGsoup
Lyrically these songs are heavy, but as always with The Spook School, they manage to use their sound to leave you brimming with hope.

The Skinny
It's been an incredible rise from The Spook School, who now find themselves on the cusp of greatness with their defining statement of a third record. They are yet another example of Scotland's rich history in artistry and fiercely Do It Yourself attitudes, once again being rewarded for the hard work and dedication this country nurtures.

Loud and Quiet
Unsurprisingly, the Scottish group remain true to their principles on ‘Could It Be Different?’ by depicting the nuances of modern life with strength and conviction. Their propensity for discord and melody reimagines the noisier end of C86, but it’s less shambling than its predecessors.

AllMusic
It's a small step up from their previous works, with stronger sounding and with sharper hooks that help make it even clearer that the Spook School are one of the most exciting and important bands of their era.

Drowned in Sound
There’s insecurity, certainly; self-reflection, yes; but more than that there’s resilience, romance, strength, sensuality and an album full of lurching, longing, lustrous pop songs. Get involved - you might just fall in love.

Dork

A life-affirming return from one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets.

Under The Radar
It's been said that those in the LGBTQ+ community sometimes have two adolescences, because the first one is often marred by antagonisation and isolation. The Spook School continue to turn dark subject matters into the perfect soundtrack to that second adolescence

The Spook School have a knack of taking some of the darkest moments in life and finding the light. There may not be any certainties in the future, but as long as you’re here, there’s hope.

No Ripcord

Outside of their reminiscences about troubled adolescence, which sometimes provide a gratingly innocent tone, How Could it Be Any Different? is otherwise brimful with lighthearted, yet meaningful songs that could actually make a difference.

Pitchfork
Perhaps they figured dark times call for bright music, but this overly polished record often feels like a missed opportunity.

As stated by critics like myself, the importance of this album is undeniable. While it may not have kept me captivated for its entirety, this had a lot to say and did so wonderfully.

The often good songwriting has a tendency to get worn down by the often sloppy performances - especially from the vocals.
